A private, not-for-profit agency located in south central Connecticut, Benhaven provides a variety of programs to serve individuals and families living with autism spectrum disorders and related impairments. Benhaven’s mission is to enable people with autism and developmental disabilities to participate in community life, exercise productive control over their own lives, have meaningful relationships and associations, be gainfully employed, and experience happiness and personal satisfaction.

We strive to fulfill our mission through the following programs – Benhaven Academy, Career & Transition Services, Children’s Behavioral Services, Individual and Family Support, Benhaven Learning Network, Residential Services, Benhaven School, and Shared Living / Community Companion Homes. Benhaven receives support from the Connecticut State Department of Education and the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services, as well as other public and private sources. The total operating budget is currently in excess of $24 million and the total number of employees is approximately 350 with facilities located in North Haven and Wallingford, Connecticut, Benhaven operates nine community residences located in New Haven, Hamden, and North Haven.

Benhaven is currently seeking a new Executive Director. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will:

  • Provide leadership and management for staff, board and contracted personnel in the Implementation of Benhaven's mission. Set goals and strategy with staff. Review and evaluate progress and implementation.
  • Provide direction, as appropriate, to the Chief Financial Officer to ensure sound financial and risk management of the organization and oversee the preparation of reports, records and other documentation that present the progress and status of Benhaven's plans and activities, as requested by the Board.
  • Lead a management team whose work in directing daily activities will allow the Executive Director to spend his/her time on short- and long-range organizational development and to interacting with parents, teachers, funders, public school systems and other community stakeholders.
  • Be a mentor and advisor to all staff and ensure a steady pipeline for developing Internal talent and/or recruiting external talent with the anticipated transition and retirement of other senior team members.
  • Serve as chief advocate within Benhaven to Inspire excellence from staff and Board alike.
  • Ensure sound management and maintenance of all facilities on the Benhaven campuses.
  • Be proactively involved in building and maintaining a strong Board to ensure that individual members understand and fulfill their volunteer commitments.
  • Serve as professional advisor and resource to the Board in all areas of programs, risk management, development, finance, policy, and governance.
  • Provide leadership for the cultivation of productive relationships with legislators, government agency leaders, news media, and other nonprofit organizations.
  • Ensure that Benhaven's story, mission, and program success are effectively developed and disseminated to the appropriate audiences.
  • Build productive relationships with other similar organizations.

Qualifications: To be considered, candidates must have a minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited institution, progressive social/ human service experience including 7-10 years of social service/ nonprofit leadership experience. Candidates must have a demonstrated track record in development, programs, and operations. Knowledge of autism and developmental disabilities is highly preferred.

Pay: $170,000.00 - $195,000.00 per year
