Job description

This is skilled work involving the application of pesticides or setting of approved traps to kill pests, which infest buildings and surrounding areas. An employee in the class is also responsible for supervising and evaluating the work of assigned staff, instructing building residents in preventive measures to control infestation, and attending periodic re-certification training. Supervision is received from an administrative superior; however, the incumbent is expected to determine work methods and to proceed with little technical supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities*

Sprays approved solutions, applies approved powders, and sets approved traps to kill pests which infest buildings and grounds

• Using approved techniques, fumigates rooms and buildings.
• Controls rodent population through approved measures.
• Identifies categories of pests and recommends corrective action.
• Recommends preventive measures to maintain pest-free environment.
• Distributes and discusses approved literature on controlling building pests to occupants.
• Provides instruction to building residents in the application of approved methods for pest control.
• Oversees and evaluates the work of staff assigned to provide assistance with extermination activities.
• Trains RRHA personnel and residents to ensure that proper safety measures are followed.
• Properly and safely applies sprays and powders to kill building pests.
• Requisitions, secures, and accounts for pesticides and equipment.
• Sets and inspects approved traps.
• Inspects buildings and grounds for evidence of infestation.
• Reports high concentration of pests or potential pest breeding environment to appropriate staff.
• Establishes rapport with building residents.
• Provides proper and complete instructions to building residents on how to eliminate and control pests.

Education: Completion of a high school diploma or a GED program.
Experience: Three years of related experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of an accredited course in pest control

Additional requirement:* Must maintain a valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Possession and retention of the appropriate pest control certification and license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, or attainment of the certification and license within six months of date of employment.

• Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
