Hiring Salary: $50,790.00
Full Salary Range: $48,836.00- $70,541.00
The City of Greensboro Fire Department is currently accepting applications for a Lateral Transfer Academy. Training for the Lateral Academy will be a shortened 4-6 week program to familiarize employees with Greensboro Fire Department operations and procedures. This program demands daily rigorous physical activity, weight training, aerobic activities, and physical fire ground performance. Employees must successfully complete all portions of the required training. Failure to do so at any point during the training period will result in termination. Upon completion of the training program, employees will be assigned to a fire company (4-5 personnel) within the Emergency Services Division and serve a three-month probationary period. The normal work schedule once assigned to Emergency Services will consist of one day (24 hours) on-duty followed by two days (48 hours) off-duty. Candidates must be in excellent health and have no conditions which would restrict their ability to perform these duties safely. These conditions must be met at the time of application and maintained throughout the application process. No residency requirements presently exist. This job is Non-Exempt and is subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
IMPORTANT DATES:
- Candidates will be required to participate in Physical and General Knowledge Testing on June 6th, 7th, or 8th (candidates will select one date).
- Candidates who obtain passing test scores will participate in the Interview process on June 20th, 21st, or 22nd (candidates will select one date pending passing scores on testing).
- More information will be emailed to candidates at the time of position closing on May 29th.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Currently serving as a paid firefighter for the previous 3 years. (Documentation will be required)- Must be certified as an NC Firefighter I and II. Out-of-state applicants must have a current equivalent to NC Certified Firefighter I and II. Equivalent certifications must be from an IFSAC or Pro-Board accredited agency.
- NC Haz-Mat Ops certification or equivalent.
- Must have NC EMT Basic certification or must be able to attain NC EMT Basic certification through reciprocity.
- Minimum age: 21 (at the time you apply)
- Must have a valid driver's license from the state of residence, with a reasonable driving record and NO DWI convictions within 3 years of applying
- Must pass the Firefighters Abilities Test (FFAT), Suitability Test, and panel interview
- Must have a high school diploma/G.E.D. Certificate
- Must pass a rigid medical examination, drug screen, and background check
- Must be a United States citizen or authorized to work in the United States
- Applicants must list at least three references on their application
- Corrected vision shall be at least 20/20 (Titmus) for both eyes together, and each eye separately, uncorrected vision shall be at least 20/100 (Titmus) in both eyes together but must correct to 20/20 with glasses or soft contacts, color vision deficiency is not acceptable, monocular vision is not acceptable
- Hearing-cumulative loss shall not exceed pre-determined frequencies in either ear, shall not have a combined loss of greater than 160 dB in both ears, hearing aids are not acceptable
An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):
- College Degree/ related coursework with experience.

Special Notes Concerning this Position:
The City of Greensboro firefighters are not eligible to receive Social Security. However, firefighters are eligible to participate in LGERS, deferred comp, etc.- An education incentive is available to benefit eligible firefighters. A $2,500 lump-sum award is provided for eligible employees who earn an Associate’s degree and a $5,000 lump-sum award is provided for eligible employees who earn a Bachelor’s degree.
- Military incentive of $2,500
- Signing bonus of $2,500 for applicants who possess NC Firefighter I & II, NC Haz-Mat Operations, & NC EMT-Basic certifications.
- Bilingual incentive pay of up to $2,500 per year.
