General Summary
The Flagger role is primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of motorist and Sunrock personnel through traffic control measures within a construction work zone. The Flagger actively participates in the safe movement and flow of traffic within their assigned construction work zone while using appropriate equipment and/or communication. The Flagger will assist the Foreman in setting up basic flagging operations for the job site. This position may perform other job duties as assigned including labor intensive work as directed. This position receives close supervision related to specific work activities, assignments, methods, etc. Typically, this position receives frequent observation/inspection over job activities; instructions are detailed and assignments are typically short-term. Good judgment and common sense is required in all duties and any other tasks assigned. Normal work hours are day or night shift eight (8) to fourteen (14) hours Monday through Friday. Weekend work may be required depending on the contract. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) as required. This job description provides an overview of responsibilities and task to be performed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Reports all unsafe conditions and actions to a supervisor and/or Manager Safety & Health.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area and meets other housekeeping needs as required by Sunrock, MSHA 30 CFR 56.20003, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22.
- Assist in the placement, moving and dismantling or signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices or duties.
- Discusses traffic plans with Foreman daily.
- Controls movement of vehicular traffic through construction work zone using signs, paddles and/or hand and flag signals.
- Ensures the protection of the client, the public, and Sunrock crew members.
- General laborer duties associated with asphalt paving.
- Required ability to shovel, rake, or handle other small tools.
- Equipment clean up as needed.
- May be asked to run small power tools.
- Performs all work in a safe, efficient manner, following routine and all standards of performance. Work is repetitive and continuous.
- Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
- Provides leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
- Performs other duties assigned.
Education and/or Experience
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred, but not required. Prior Asphalt paving/grading experience preferred, but not required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid driver s license required; NCDOT Certified Flagger Training preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read a limited number of two and three-syllable English words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
- Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
