FOOD SERVICE ASSISANT
POSITION SUMMARY:
Food Service Assistant is a Full-Time, salaried position whose responsibilities will include supervising the food prep and cooking of lunch and dinner for our Soup Kitchen guests, complying with safety and cleanliness standards, supervising volunteers in the kitchen. To be successful in this role, it is imperative to be able to educate volunteers on food safety and cooking techniques while ensuring them, and our guests, have a positive experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Work in conjunction with Food Service Manager and other Food Service Coordinator to complete daily tasks and goals
- Supervise Soup Kitchen volunteers and directing their experience
- Supervise food prep and cooking
- Order food supplies and kitchen equipment, as needed
- Rotate food in pantry, walk-in coolers and freezers
- Train kitchen volunteers on prep work and food safety practices
- Crosstrain in Second Helpings, our Food Rescue program
- Store food products in compliance with safety practices (e.g. in refrigerators)
- Help keep daily and monthly reports for the Soup Kitchen and Second Helpings
- Maintain sanitation and safety standards in the kitchen and Second Helpings area
- Ability to lead others effectively, including a diverse array of community and client volunteers
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- High School degree or equivalent
- 2+ years’ experience in Food Service Industry
- Hands-on experience with planning daily food service
- Knowledge of a wide range of recipes
- Familiarity with kitchen sanitation and safety regulations
- Excellent organizational skills
- Volunteer management
- Conflict management abilities
- Flexibility to work during evenings and weekends
- Be able to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift up to 50 pounds
- Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time
- ServSafe Certification is a plus
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Responsibilities of the Food Service Coordinator will involve flexible scheduling and will include both evening and weekend hours, as well as some rotate Holidays. The main schedule for this individual will be 11am to 7pm Tuesday through Saturday. This position will also require sensitivity to behavioral and other challenges displayed by the high need population we serve. This position’s task manager is the Food Services Manager and will be supervised by the Associate Director.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must possess a valid N.C. driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to be insured on the agency’s automobile policy. Must be able to drive agency-owned vehicles, including passenger vans.
2. Must pass pre-employment drug and background screenings as a condition of hire.
3. Must have reliable transportation to work.

Founded in 1983, Good Shepherd has grown to become the largest provider of services to the hungry and homeless in the Cape Fear region. Programs and services include a soup kitchen, food salvage program, day and night shelters, on-site medical clinic, case management and counseling, transitional and permanent supportive housing for homeless Veterans. The organization has 35 part- and full-time staff and more than 500 volunteers. Good Shepherd has worked diligently and intentionally to move beyond serving merely as a safety net for hungry and homeless guests, devoting equal time and resources to transitioning our guests back to housing and stability in the community. Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $13.00 - $15.00 per hour
