Salary Range for each position level

General Engineering Tech I A17, $44,400- $58,399/year

General Engineering Tech II A18, $44,400 - $64,449/year

Position Description


General Engineering Tech I

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

General Engineering Tech II

Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

General Engineering Tech I

  • Administers construction and/or bridge inspection record-keeping activities in a District Area Office.
  • Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Inspects complex maintenance and construction-related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures.
  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Monitors and/or maintains construction records to ensure contractors comply with federal requirements regarding Equal Employment Opportunity, on-the-job training programs, the Historically Underutilized Business and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise programs.
  • Maintains files of shop drawings and monitors progress of construction activities.
  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

General Engineering Tech II

  • Assists Area Engineer in planning and coordinating Area Office operations.
  • Consults with contractors’ superintendent on work progress and maintenance problems, reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Serves as project leader responsible for construction inspection activities for large and/or complex construction projects or for multiple district construction projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

General Engineering Tech I:

Experience: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

General Engineering Tech II

Experience: 6 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

General Engineering Tech I or II

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to noise.
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
