Position: HIGH SCHOOL SUCESS SPECIALIST
Department: Student Services
Program: School Improvement
Reports to: Designated Supervisor
Classification/Range: MESDEA
Schedule: 210 days per year, 8 hours per day

POSITION PURPOSE:
The primary role of the High School Success Specialist is to build regional capacity, through continuous improvement processes, within teams and school districts to effect positive change in the following key indicators: Four-Year Graduation, Five-Year Completion, Ninth Grade On-Track, and Regular Attenders.
The High School Success Specialist is responsible for facilitating integrated improvement planning in alignment with state- and federally-funded programs including Career Technical Education, Every Day Matters, and High School Success. The High School Success Specialist will support regional stakeholders in creating and aligning effective systems to meet students’ needs and reduce disparities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop positive and supportive relationships with all members of the educational community, including local school districts, other ESD teams, the Oregon Department of Education and other community agencies.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate continuous improvement teams and regional networks within and across districts to increase equitable access, attendance, retention, and graduation of students in 9th to 12th grade.
  • Support the alignment of systems at the ESD, district and school levels based on the educational community vision.
  • Guide the educational community to develop a culture of multiple measures of data based decision making that impacts student achievement and outcomes for ALL students.
  • Support district leaders and teams in program improvement and identifying relevant areas of ESD support.
  • Create, organize and facilitate regional and district-specific professional learning opportunities, including in-person, virtual, and asynchronous learning.
  • Attend advisories or other identified meetings as needed or requested and provide appropriate information as requested to both verbal and written formats.
  • Be ready for challenging professional development and open to learning and implementing regionally appropriate approaches to attaining goals.
  • Have the ability to work effectively in a team environment and the willingness and desire to support others in doing their best work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
  • Daily and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Successfully complete a background check through the Oregon Department of Education.
  • Valid driver license with ability to travel between worksites and training events.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to develop collaborative relationships with district, agency and state staff.
  • Small and large-group facilitation, coaching, and consulting skills to build capacity in school and district staff.
  • Knowledge of inclusive, culturally responsive practices including community partnerships.
  • Facilitation of integrated improvement efforts towards improved student outcomes in chronic absenteeism, 9th grade on-track, high school graduation, CTE access and retention.
  • Broad understanding of Multi-Tiered System of Support Framework.
  • Knowledge of best practices in student, family and community engagement.
  • Ability to use multiple measures of data to inform decision-making at the regional, district, school, and classroom levels.
  • Ability to build capacity around data literacy
  • Strong communication skills:
    • Ability to accept and use feedback;
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
    • Ability to communicate using technology;
    • Keep the supervisor informed of decisions and actions made in alignment with scope of responsibilities and agency policy.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Valid TSPC License
  • Master’s Degree and/or
  • Three years’ experience as a classroom teacher or school counselor at the high school level
  • Two years’ experience serving in a leadership role (This may include as a teacher leader, administrator, program administrator, instructional coach, or other role requiring significant leadership skills) or
  • Any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a typical office and school environment, subject to moderate to loud noise. Regular travel within and outside the District will be required with occasional statewide and rare out-of-state travel. Activities outside of the normal workday may also be required based on project scope or deadlines. Although rare, evenings and weekends may also be required based on project scope or deadlines. MESD supports remote working when the job duties and responsibilities allow, with prior supervisor approval.
  • Mobility: Frequent sitting for long periods of time; occasional bending or squatting.
  • Lifting: Frequently up to 10 pounds; occasional up to 25 pounds.
  • Vision: Constant use of overall vision; frequent reading and close-up work; occasional color and depth vision.
