SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Kapolei Charter School, Teacher will develop lesson plans that ensure the attainment of state learning standards and the additional specific grade-by-grade learning standards set forth in the charter. You will facilitate the team relationship and meet individually with students to assist in overcoming barriers to each student’s educational progress. He/she will monitor student progress and communicate with students and parents. The position will work with the instructional team in meeting the educational objectives and adhering to Hawaii State Standards.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SOCIAL WORK/CASE MANAGEMENT – 30%
- Leads the intake process to introduce the student to the school and begin outlining his/her educational goals.
- Assesses students’ life experiences for possible translation into school credits.
- Assists instructors in developing student’s individual learning plans based on intake assessment.
- Appraises aptitude, interests, and personality characteristics of participants. Confers with program participant, guardian, social workers, and other service providers to develop and implement a comprehensive and youth-centered Individual Service Plan.
- Becomes part of a reliable alliance and is able to connect emotionally and socially with group members. Provides support and maintains open communication with instructors.
- Manages and monitors students’ learning experience to ensure student engagement and accomplishment of learning goals through individual and/or group meetings.
- Identifies and connects students to community resources to remove barriers and support academic and/or personal goals. Initiate and maintain contact with key community partners (community agencies, educational institutions and employers) to enhance the menu of support services provided to students.
- Updates and reviews participants’ case records, service plans and goals on a regular basis to ensure development and maintenance are being met, based on program requirements and contract compliance.
- Creates and/or coordinates learning materials or environments geared to meet the needs of each participant as identified in the Individual Service Plan.
- Works with participants to increase motivation, provide consistent reinforcement to learning, continuous assessment of level of functioning, and continuous feedback to consumers on all learning activities.
- Participate cooperatively in the system of evaluation as stated in the charter’s guidelines.
- Provides Job Readiness, basic skills enrichment training, applied learning opportunities (addressing community service, health and fitness, and humanities) to participants. Works closely with participants to assure the concepts put forth are clearly understood and participants are able to display a degree of competency.
- Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, prepare student reports and communicate with parents regarding their child's progress.
INSTRUCTIONAL LEADER – 25%
- Design, deliver instructional lessons to meet curriculum requirements adopted by the Board of Education.
- Provide planned learning experiences that motivate students, utilize best practices, are inclusive of parent participation, adhere to KCS’s educational model, and are developmentally appropriate.
- Develop current lesson plans (daily and/or weekly) and instructional materials that provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Select and utilize appropriate instructional materials, aids, and supplies that assist in the development of innovative, well-organized units of study.
- Identify, record, reflect on student needs and cooperate with the professional learning community to assess, plan, monitor, and implement methods to solve student health, attitude, and learning issues.
- Work collaboratively with parents to design, deliver, manage learning experiences for all learners.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND AESTHETICS/ASSESSMENT – 25%
- Establish and maintain high standards of student behavior needed to achieve optimal learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Provide a functional and attractive environment in the classroom conducive for learning and aligned to the curriculum.
- Adhere to KCS’s social/emotional learning policy.
- Plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants, parents, and other paraprofessionals as appropriate and applicable.
- Participate cooperatively in the system of evaluation as stated in the charter’s guidelines.
- Administer assessments in a variety of forms (formative, summative, standardized, etc.) in accordance with the charter’s testing programs.
- Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, prepare student reports and communicate with parents regarding their child's progress.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES – 20%
- Communicate with parents, administration, colleagues in a timely, consistent manner.
- Actively participate in a professional learning community.
- Perform basic attendance accounting and business services as required in an accurate and timely manner.
- Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Share in the sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committees as agreed upon.
- Attend all school functions as required by the Board of Education.
- Attend all teacher in-service education required and provided by the administration.
- Maintain professional competence through participation in additional in-service activities and other learning opportunities and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
Experience: License issued by the Hawaii Teachers Standards Board; license issued by another state with the ability to obtain a teacher license in the State of Hawaii; or imminent graduation from state-approved teacher education program. 2 years of experience in mentoring, counseling, advising or related field. Experience working with high school age students in a non-traditional setting and/or in adult education setting highly preferred.
Knowledge of: Prior relevant teaching experience. Local, state and federal laws applying to charter schools, special education needs and issues, student/classroom management techniques, common academic, social, behavioral and developmental problems of students. Inquiry based educational programs, and social and emotional Learning programs.
Ability to: Ability to implement effective classroom management and student care methods and techniques; speak and work effectively with students, teachers, parents and community members and to assess students' progress and modify learning activities and methods as necessary.
