Histology Technician
Job description
Process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines for this level in a clinical laboratory. In addition, monitor level and quality of work performed by others. Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools. Resolve problems that impact test results.
- Histotechnician starting rate: $18.54/hr.
- Histotechnologist starting rate: $20.05/hr.
Eligible applicants will be offered a sign-on bonus of $15,000 for a 3-year commitment!
Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates progression of skils towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
- Supports academic mission of department.
- Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
- Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
- Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
- Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
- Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
- Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
- Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

Histotechnician
- High school diploma.
- Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam; successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years or an Associates degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
- 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.
Histotechnologist
- Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); B.S. degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years, or a B.S.degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years. Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist.
- 1 year of full-time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- HTL (ASCP)- Am Society Clinical Pathology required within 1 year of hire.
