This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Information Technology Consultant, competency level 3 position for the Academic Technologies department at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

Information Security: Proactively securing and protecting OSU’s digital assets and information systems is crucial to our missions of teaching and learning, research, and extension and engagement. All OSU IT professionals are directly responsible for providing high-quality and secure IT systems and services. Persons in technology roles are expected to be responsive to security-related actions and requirements and to collaboratively find secure ways to support the OSU community.
This position is in the Academic Technologies which is part of the Technical and Solutions Architecture (TSA) unit within Oregon State University’s University Information & (UIT) division, this position shares and supports the University’s mission by assisting the University to extend all programs, teachings, research, and communication throughout the world. The services provided by UIT-TSA units, including Academic Technologies, Administrative Technologies, Infrastructure, Digital Experience, Digital Research, and Network & Telecom Services, assist the University community by facilitating transmission of knowledge and expertise to its members, thereby enhancing their ability to be productive, valued, and esteemed members of the University community, serving the State of Oregon. Services are provided to students, faculty, and staff for curricular, research, intellectual, and administrative activities and needs, as well as to the wider Oregon higher education and government community. There are approximately 175 faculty and classified employees in UIT, as well as 150 FTE student positions. UIT administers a total budget of $35+ million.
The Multimedia Production Specialist is a classified position that broadly supports Oregon State University (OSU) units and departments within a team-based production unit in OSU’s Academic Technologies, University Information and Technology (UIT). This position provides leadership in the management of video and multimedia production to support faculty and students involved in the production of distance education classes. The position also supports the production team with event capture, utilizing digital media technology, for both live streaming and later video-on-demand viewing via cloud-based delivery.

The Multimedia Production Specialist plans, organizes, and directs multimedia production, working directly with faculty in producing distance education and resident courses using digital media technology (including IP transmission, live web streaming, and cloud-based delivery). The Multimedia Production Specialist is also responsible for ensuring that the quality of multimedia content continuously meets or exceeds industry standards. This position involves some travel both on-campus and at times off-campus for event coverage. A significant portion of time is spent consulting with faculty, staff, students and other clients to best serve their digital media technology needs. The position requires non-linear editing, graphics development, ability to communicate needs and equipment problems with engineering staff, and strong organization and communication skills.

Position Duties
50% Multimedia Production:
Initiates scripts, recording, and editing multimedia productions independently or with a team of collaborators to setup and deliver (live transmission) or capture (record) interviews, courses, lectures, conferences, debates, classroom presentations, news conferences, performances, and other campus related events; fills single or multiple roles on multimedia projects including: director, photographer, editor, writer, sound design and titles and graphic production. Provides creative solutions to video production needs.

Travels independently, or with a team, on-campus and at times off-campus to capture and/or transmit content from students, faculty, partners, et cetera.

Work includes accessing web interface of videoconference units with IP address to troubleshoot and/or confirm connections; logging into classroom control system to operate computers, projectors, visualizers, and other devices to support education usage; maintaining camera presets for optimal video quality; ensuring proper shot composition; setting proper audio levels for delivery, recording, and classroom use.

Consult with and anticipates multimedia needs of faculty members and consults with subject matter experts to identify multimedia needs. Review production of media with clients involved with the project.

Anticipates problems that may arise from technologies that are currently being used for multimedia productions.

Develops standards in storage with Media Assessment Management systems and maintain metadata guidelines to sustain storage. Reviews quality and content of outside contracted work and approves work for final production.

20% – Program Management / Administration:
Work with OSU units to prioritize, plan, produce and distribute multimedia content. Create budgets, timelines and project management documentation that can be used by multidisciplinary teams, some directly reporting and others in various units and departments around campus; ensures programming reflects strategic priorities of each unit; organizes the distribution of content on the Web, television and through live events.

Collaborates in the overall marketing planning for programs, events, units, etc., so that video and multimedia content elements are part of a plan’s integrated storytelling.

Organizes the distribution of content across multiple websites, and occasionally through promotional events.

20% Lead work:
Serves as project manager by creating goals, timelines and project management documentation for production schedules to ensure that strategic priorities and deadlines are met, seeking input from other designated leads of UIT-Academic Technologies units. When assigned, leads project management, design, technical equipment operations, software applications, time management, prioritization of tasks, and monitoring project timelines.

Contacts appropriate stakeholders to schedule and coordinate meetings.

Provides leadership and direction for assigned student workers and interns. Reviews multimedia projects, establishes goals for assigned interns and/or student worker(s).

Onboards and trains new team members and student workers for Media Services.

10% Professional Development and Service:
Identifies emerging technologies, trends, and resources in multimedia production for distribution along with making budget recommendations, serving as a consultant to unit directors and managers.

Provides backup for other multimedia developers. Serve as a member of Academic Technologies teams as assigned. Service may include other duties as assigned, such as coverage in absence of others, serving as a representative on university committees, and serving as a representative on various standing University Information and Technology committees.

Represents Academic Technologies at fora, workshops, trade shows, customer meetings, and other sales opportunities for constituents and clients.
Minimum Qualifications
This classification requires a basic foundation of knowledge and skills of technology and information systems generally obtained through an AA degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified course work in applicable fields of study and at least one year of related work experience.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated professional work experience and skills in scriptwriting, photography, sound recording, and editing.
  • Experience with basic HTML.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, which augment and support the efforts and duties of the position.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365.
  • Familiarity with online video platforms such as YouTube and Kaltura.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with administrative leadership.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, and across multiple teams/units.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in film, marketing, communications, or related field, or 10+ years’ experience in live video production, and lead work in managing complex video projects.
  • Three years experience working in higher education, including experience with online courses.
  • Skilled and/or trained in multimedia design including animation/3d/multimedia tools.
  • Experience working with faculty in a consulting/training role.
  • Experience with videoconferencing and web-collaboration software/hardware including Zoom and Teams.
  • Experience with NLEs, and specialty software including but not limited to: Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, Davinci Resolve, FarmersWife, Cirkus, Frame.IO, ShoFlo.
  • Excellent live production hardware knowledge, including but not limited to: Ross, Blackmagic, Panasonic, Sony, Yamaha, PTZoptics.
  • Experience with AV-over-IP systems and virtual workflows.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Position involves a potentially irregular work schedule and the possibility of working outside of regular 8 am – 5 pm hours due to travel and recording/transmitting content at special events. This position requires working in a variety of environments across campus, as well as an open office environment.
