What You Will Do

You will be working as part of a design team assessing, maintaining, and upgrading facility systems at LANL. Specific tasks will include developing contract documents consisting of drawings, specifications, calculations, and special inspections to define and maintain the technical baseline for new and existing facility systems throughout the facility lifecycle. This will require interfacing and coordinating with all stakeholders including other engineering disciplines, equipment manufacturers and customers during design and construction to establish design requirements, scope, schedule, cost, and modifications for projects. As a senior engineer you will be required to promote leadership, quality, and safety values, to internal co-workers, and project stakeholders, including external auditors, vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors. You will also assist in defining maintenance requirements including corrective maintenance and the tracking and trending of systems performance.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated expertise in instrumentation and control design experience in nuclear, accelerator or industrial facility operations.
  • Demonstrated expert ability in design of Building Automation Systems (BAS), applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to troubleshoot and resolve facility and operations-based engineering problems.
  • Proficiency in developing, testing, and approving conceptual and detailed instrumentation and control designs, programs, installations, and workstations that ensure a product actually functions, performs efficiently and is suitable for its purpose.
  • Ability to lead teams in the preparation of documents, studies, and reports associated with facility engineering projects and control system diagnosis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering work planning, budgeting, and design coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability in coaching and mentoring of early career engineers.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable
  • Advanced knowledge of industry codes and standards (ISA, ISO, ANSI, IBC, NEC, NFPA, etc.)
  • Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes
  • Familiar with Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering along with industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes and standards
  • Experience with BAS Software, associated engineering tools, graphic software (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), and Microsoft Visio.
  • Experience with Automated Logic and Phoenix software, including WebCtrl, SiteBuilder, ViewBuilder, LogicBuilder, InterOp 3.02, Alert, Draw, EDB, Eikon, Supervision, and Accel Works.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
