Working environment / Qualifications:
1. Position may require prolonged sitting or standing and light to moderate lifting (25#)
2. Working conditions can be dusty at times.
3. Ability to use microscope for 4 - 7 hours/day when necessary.
4. Ability to understand and perform basic math (addition/subtraction, multiplication, percentages)
5. Ability to follow written instructions as provided in experimental protocols.

Junior Lab Tech 4944, Full time - 12 month Position at the Junior Laboratory Technician level is being offered at in the Nematology Research Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, Southern Research and Outreach Center at Waseca, MN. This position provides laboratory support to faculty and staff researching Soybean Cyst Nematodes (SCN) and other plant parasitic nematodes. Work hours (Monday - Friday 7:30 am- 4:00 pm)
Responsibilities:
1. 70% Extract nematodes from soil samples, count with a microscope and collect other plant data. Operate other lab equipment including, but not limited to centrifuge,
elutriator, chlorophyll meter, incubator, autoclave, pH meter, cyst crushing device.
2. 15% Set up greenhouse experiments. Prepare soil/sand mix for use in experiments. Fill containers with soil/sand mix; inoculate with nematodes, plant with appropriate seed. Monitor watering equipment. Maintain and clean greenhouse facility.
3. 10% Assist with other projects in nematology research as needed. Take soil samples from field using a soil probe; prepare soil for testing, weed field plots, clean supplies and equipment used in testing procedures, and various other duties.
4. 5% Data entry using Microsoft Excel. Record results from experiments and relay data to researcher.
Assist in other departments of the Southern Research and Outreach Center, when necessary, and perform other duties as assigned.
