POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for assisting the medical technologists and technicians in processing and final disposition of specimens through the technical departments. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for clerical and client services duties within the technical departments (phoning and faxing laboratory results when requested, filing instrument printouts, entering orders on DRL
patients). They may provide backup assistance for phlebotomy, if needed.
Responsibilities:
DUTIES, ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Receive specimen and enter orders for testing
  • Process and store laboratory specimens
  • Transport specimens using LIS functionality
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS (CONTINUED):
Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience:
One (1) to two (2) years phlebotomy, laboratory-related or medical office experience
Basic personal computer skills and comfort with Microsoft Windows operating system; database and word processing skills required

Certification and Licensure:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must use written and verbal/visual sources of information, e.g., reading requisitions.
  • Prolonged standing, sitting and walking.
  • Must possess digital dexterity, e.g., using computer keyboard, holding and manipulating various sizes of specimen containers and tubes.
  • Must perform activities requiring sustained concentration, e.g., pouring, aliquoting and labeling specimens, extensive and accurate data entry.
  • Must be able to lift 10 lbs.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITONS:
  • Must have the ability to work under stress, responding to critical nature of medical business.
  • Must be willing to work any shifts, weekends, or holidays. The laboratory is staffed seven days per week, twenty-four hours per day.
  • Must work with biological and chemical hazards.

REQUIRED PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
  • Eye/face protection
  • Lab coat
  • Gloves
