REPORTS TO: Outreach Services Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW: Responsible to Outreach Services Manager and works cooperatively with the Shelter and Outreach. Does not supervise other employees. May work with interns or volunteers as assigned. Interrelates with all staff members. Provide support and guidance to victims while they interface with the judicial system in the areas of civil or criminal justice. This is a 40 hour full time position.

RELATIONSHIPS: Works with court system staff, law enforcement agencies, personnel in other community agencies, and Dawn Center Staff when providing advocacy for survivors of domestic violence/sexual assault.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides crisis intervention and advocacy for survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence.
  • Meets with victims who are in outreach/shelter as needed to ascertain the need for assistance with any area of the judicial/legal system.
  • Maintains an office in the court house to assist victims who may need help with filing Domestic/Sexual Violence Injunctions (DVIs/SVIs), referrals or other Dawn Center services.
  • Advocates/intercedes as necessary with members of the Clerk of Courts office, State Attorney’s office, law enforcement or judges on behalf of victims of domestic and sexual violence.
  • Educates victims as to their options within the legal/judicial system.
  • Assists victims with completing paperwork that may be required by the judicial system in order to facilitate legal procedures.
  • Assists victims with filing victim’s compensation claims.
  • Opens files when meeting face to face with participant.
  • Provides case management and/or counseling for the victim which will enhance prosecution or safety for the victim and the victim’s children. Document in participant’s file as appropriate.
  • Attends Court Hearing and Trials as assigned by supervisor.
  • Attends meetings as assigned by supervisor.  Provide information/referral as needed.
  • Maintains open communication with victim’s Advocate or other staff.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with all areas of the judicial system and law enforcement.
  • Assists with monthly statistical reports and other reports that may be required by funding sources or the agency.
  • On-call (on rotation) to provide emergency injunction services as Deputy Clerk to after-hours petitioners.
  • Assists shelter and outreach staff on an as needed basis.
  • Works with interns and volunteers assigned to work within the legal advocacy program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • May makes community education/awareness presentations as appropriate or assigned.
  • Provides shelter or outreach coverage in the event the regular staff is not available.
  • Answers crisis calls as needed.

PROHIBITED FUNCTIONS:

  • Does not supervise other employees.
  • Does not respond to requests from media.
  • Does not provide any service which could be interpreted as practicing law.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services or criminology preferred.
  • Experience in court advocacy and/or negotiation preferred.
  • Can function calmly in a crisis atmosphere.
  • Have knowledge of community resources and the ability to maintain a cordial working relationship with other agencies.
  • Have computer skills and can work in the Windows environment.
  • Must function independently while working cooperatively as a member of a team.
  • Must be able to pass Level II background screening.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s license and automobile insurance and have reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to work with a culturally diverse community with sensitivity and professionalism.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.25 per hour
