Description:
The Library Specialist supports the work of the Circulation Services and Collection Maintenance units in the Daley Access Services department. They assist patrons via phone, email, and at service desks and enforce conduct policies to maintain a scholarly environment in the Daley Library. The Library Specialist assesses stacks, shifts materials, and provides support for preservation. They are responsible for overseeing evening operations and securing the building at closing times and weekends.
This is a 37.5 hour per week nighttime position, normally scheduled weekdays Tuesday to Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Work hours change during summer and intersessions due to reduced Library hours of operation during these periods. This position may be expected to work overnight shifts during final exam periods twice per year.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist patrons at service points: answers questions in person, on the phone, and in the library. Update patron accounts, checks in/out materials, schedules study rooms, maintains security for the collection, and assists with routine fines/lost billing issues. Direct inquiries to appropriate resources. Collect and collate data and statistics for department. Maintain lost and found items log and follow up as needed. Modify assignments to ensure staffing coverage for the Circulation Desk and Daley Library doors.
- Support the work of the Collection Maintenance unit including assessing stacks, shifting, directing the work of students performing maintenance work, and providing support for preservation.
- Oversee the work of student assistants and workflows in the Daley Library during evening and/or weekend shifts. Contribute to the evaluation of student assistant work; reviewing work for accuracy and completeness; records and reports student performance to student supervision team.
- Monitor building activities and enforce conduct policies to maintain a scholarly environment. Monitor the activities of contracted security officers on library patrol. Secure the building at closing time. Report security and facilities issues to appropriate staff and external resources.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
- work experience in a library or equivalent setting.
- college course work in any field as measured by the following conversion table
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
