Position Summary:

The Log Scaler evaluates each log to determine grade, waste, and total board feet, cordage, or other wood unit.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Comply with safety standards at all times and correct/report any observed safety hazards.
• Scale and grade according to the eastside scale of Scribner Decimal C Short Log Rules.
• Record determinations of deducted waste from total volume.
• Identify logs of substandard or special grade so that they can be returned to shippers, regarded, recut, or transferred for other processing.
• Efficiently operate and input log data into handheld device/scaling computers.
• Comply with the allowable error between the scaler and the check-scaler.
• Assist with weighmaster duties as needed.
• Work independently with minimal supervision.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by Procurement Forester .
• On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.

Required Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of scaling computers, hand-held devices, and associated software programs.
• Ability to be regularly check-scaled by third party scaling bureaus and perform within error tolerances for scaling quality and accuracy.
• Excellent time-management and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to work variable hours depending on the logging schedules.
• Ability to follow all company, state and federal safety rules when performing required job duties.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal history check and a pre-employment drug screening.

Education and Experience:

• Five years of log scaling experience and proficiency in identifying and scaling Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, sugar pine, incense cedar, white fir, Shasta fir, and lodgepole pine, preferred.
• Knowledge of United States Forest Service Region 5 scaling requirements and compliance.

Environmental Conditions:

May be exposed to dust, noise, trip hazards, and variable weather and temperatures.

Required Personal Protective Equipment:

Individuals must be willing to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all required times. Positions may require additional PPE at specific times. Examples of PPE which may be required include, but are not limited to, hand protection, eye protection, hearing protection, a hard hat, foot protection, a face shield and/or a respirator.

Hourly rate: $28-$30
