Job description
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for the supervision of direct care staff and proves quality care to assigned residents under the direction of the Nurse Manager. Supervises paraprofessionals in selected aspects of care. Assists in creating, maintaining, and managing a safe therapeutic milieu. Observes and records medical needs of residents and responses to medical treatments. Assesses resident needs and provides nursing care, as necessary. Ensures 1st Aid is applied as needed and appropriately. Ensures the daily schedule is followed and the residents report on time for meals, activities, school, and appointments. Ensures paraprofessional staff receive breaks, often covering the assigned shifts allow for breaks to occur. Conducts rounding on residents and staff and documents findings per policy.
The LPN participates in the treatment planning process, implements the treatment plan, draws, obtains, and tracks lab specimen and findings. Educates residents in group or individually providing medication teaching, life skills, nutrition teaching, problem solving, and other groups as assigned and documents in accordance with Facility policy. Educates and counsels resident/family toward an understanding of health/illness and the plans for post-discharge care.
Implements physician orders/renewals/consents regarding treatment, medication / medication administration and diet within appropriate timeframe. Alerts physicians to and assists in medical and psychiatric emergency treatments and manages emergency situations, as necessary. Completes all required nursing documentation/paperwork prior to the end of the designated shift. Acts as a role model for paraprofessional staff.
The LPN may at times supervise In-School-Suspension and when needed cover for the Safety Monitor. Responds to codes to ensure standards are being maintained.
Maintains strict confidentiality and privacy of students' and residents' personally identifiable health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy rules and Facility policies. Meets mandatory staff development requirement per the standards of all regulatory and accrediting agencies.

Minimum Education
Associate of Applied Science in Nursing.
OR
Bachelor of Science in Nursing, preferred, not required.
Minimum Work Experience
Minimum of 6 months years in a behavioral healthcare setting with the population served preferred
Required Skills, Licenses / Certifications
Licensed Practical Nurse License by the Department of Health Professions in good standing.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Facility s approved Behavioral Management Program
Valid Driver's License in good standing
General Requirements
Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Interdepartmental Regulation of Children s Residential Facilities.

Knowledge of professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques used in the care and treatment of psychiatric and behavioral healthcare residents / students.
Knowledge of social, psychological, and physical factors of mental and emotional disorders.
Knowledge of medical and psychological terminology.
Knowledge of medications, including psychotropic drugs, and effects on behavioral healthcare residents.
Knowledge and ability to control, prepare and administer medications.
Knowledge of the State of Virginia laws and regulations for the nursing profession.
Knowledge of the regulations pertaining to psychiatric nursing and the treatment of the mentally and emotionally disturbed residents / students.
Knowledge of the theories, principles, and techniques of group and individual psychotherapy.
Knowledge of the symptoms and behavior patterns of emotionally disturbed mentally ill residents / students.
Knowledge and the ability to apply medical and psychiatric emergency procedures.
Ability to apply professional nursing care principles and procedures in the evaluation and treatment of psychiatric and behavioral healthcare residents / students.
Ability to develop interpersonal therapeutic relationships with psychiatric and behavioral healthcare residents / students.
Ability to use professional judgment to ascertain and to apply appropriate intervention techniques with residents / students in crisis.
Ability to provide prompt, efficient, and responsive service.
Proficient with Windows, Outlook, internet research, MS Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
