Position Purpose and Objectives:
Under the direction of the Lead Facilities Technician, the Maintenance/Handyperson is responsible for performing the maintenance and repair of Sterling commercial buildings and offices. This includes but is not limited to lobbies, entrance areas, lavatories, kitchen, and all office areas. She/he/they are responsible for performing routine maintenance/inspections; including electrical, plumbing as required. Basic cleaning duties completing necessary repairs and replacing supplies needed.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Follow all safety standards and guidelines; manage and address all maintenance related requests, respond to emergency requests as required, report problems or unsafe conditions to the Lead Facilities Technician.
  • Maintain building and grounds for a clean, neat, and professional appearance, including snow removal, salting, and sidewalk clearance.
  • Perform the following: sweeping, mopping, restroom cleaning and sanitizing, garbage and recycling collection and disposal, dusting, and window washing in assigned areas throughout Sterling at minimum three times a week.
  • Empty all wastebaskets and/or trash bins daily; replace liners as needed.
  • Perform minor electrical work.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and expediting repairs of essential machines and equipment as needed.
  • Repair, clean, and sanitize refrigerators, kitchen sinks/counters, and restroom sinks/urinals/toilets.
  • Replenish supplies required for kitchen, restrooms, and offices; notify Receptionist and/or Lead Facilities Technician when additional supplies are needed.
  • Maintain appropriate indoor air temperatures, replace air filters when necessary.
  • Perform minor repairs and touch-ups as necessary, i.e., hanging pictures/bulletin boards, sheetrock, painting, light bulb replacement, faucet repair, stripping floors and re-waxing, and other assignments as directed by supervisor.
  • Escorts and oversees all outside maintenance vendors performing work on the building.
  • Report any serious maintenance problems or safety hazards to the Lead Facilities Technician.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:


  • Minimum of 2-year relevant work experience required
  • Familiarity and experience working in a commercial building
  • Must use and bring personal tools
  • Must be comfortable climbing ladders
  • Must be mature, comfortable dealing with employee at all levels, and handling a variety of maintenance problems and issues
  • Must be a proactive self-starter who problem solves, follows through and completes assigned tasks
  • Must be a team player, dependable and reliable
  • Good communication, organizational, and time management skills
  • Must be available to work assigned shift and overtime if required
  • Proficient English communication skills
  • Knowledge of Spanish preferred but not required
  • Ability to follow safety standards and be on-call for emergency situations

Working Conditions:

  • The position requires individuals to work indoors and outdoors in all weather and lighting conditions. This includes sun, rain, snow, cold, heat, etc. The work environment is usually noisy and may be performed while exposed to chemicals and odors commonly associated with printing.   • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, which includes days, nights, overnights and weekends.

  • This position requires the individual to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Individual must be comfortable and able to work on a ladder.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
