Position Description
This is a Mechanical Engineer position in the functional printing business reporting to the VP, Printed Electronics. The scope of this position includes the design and development of new equipment to be used in the functional printing manufacturing operations, as well as modifications and improvements to existing equipment. The functional printing business includes the production of patterned conductive films and other printed electronics products. The manufacturing processes includes production-scale, roll-to-roll equipment in class 1,000 and 10,000 cleanroom environments. The development and manufacturing of patterned conductive films using two fundamental process blocks: 1) flexographic printing and 2) electroless copper plating. Printed electronics products are tested for electrical performance both in-line on roll-to-roll equipment, as well as off-line. The position requires strong collaboration with an existing manufacturing and development teams, as well as external vendors to optimize new and existing equipment used in the manufacturing workflow. A successful candidate will be able to lead the design and fabrication of hardware, balancing the needs and timing across multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • New equipment design and build of tools for use within the printed electronics manufacturing flow, working with the electrical engineering staff and process engineers to ensure functional criteria are achieved
  • Drive hardware improvements through systematic exploration of opportunities using best practices – with a focus toward manufacturability and process robustness.
  • Work with the Electrical Engineering staff to specify and implement mechanical elements of electrical testing projects
  • Maintain ownership of master drawings for all functional printing hardware

Required Skills

  • Experience with equipment designs for use in cleanroom manufacturing
  • Proven track record of project management and leadership implementing new equipment and hardware modifications
  • Ability to design, troubleshoot, and improve complex electrical, optical, and mechanical systems
  • Proficient in 3D CAD from initial design capture to release; experience with Solid Works and Creo/CoCreate preferred
  • Proven track record of driving continuous improvement in a manufacturing hardware through collaboration with process and quality engineering teams, while using disciplined management-of-change processes.
  • Experience working with process engineers to optimize hardware design for manufacturing process optimization.
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects

Desired Skills

  • Experience in roll-to-roll manufacturing, functional printing, printed electronics, flexible electronics, and/or additive manufacturing.
  • Understanding of transparent conductive films properties
  • Understanding of functional requirements for optical products
  • Familiarity with testing hardware and software design principles
