GENERAL SUMMARY
Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the Medical Technologist II or Director/Supervisor.
Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
Department Medical Technologist II:
a. Maintains the technical procedure manuals within the assigned laboratory section and adheres to the laboratory's Document Control policies/procedures.
b. Coordinates new test development, utilizes new test/new procedure/new instrumentation checklist.
c. Keeps current in the field of laboratory medicine and takes an active role in the education of the laboratory staff and other healthcare professionals.
d. Keeps current with the section's CAP checklist standards and pursues an active role with the onsite and offsite inspections.
e. Maintains appropriate communications with staff regarding procedural changes, updates, QC issues, instrumentation and troubleshooting within the assigned laboratory section.
f. Maintains adequate supplies/reagents/stock for the assigned laboratory section.
g. Provides for the safety of department employees.
h. Handles problems/issues responsibly and professionally in supervisor's absence.
i. Assists in assigning appropriate personnel./obtaining schedule coverage to ensure optimal workflow in supervisor's absence.
j. Assesses competency of staff for their department of responsibility.
k. Develops, implements, communicates, and maintains the entire quality assurance program for the laboratory and facilitates any associated corrective action; includes quality management through monthly trending of general incident reports.
l. Prepares quality reports to include specific monitors as defined by the Director/Supervisor.
m. Manages operational area specific to quality control and regulatory requirements, e.g. continual readiness (CAP checklist standards), proficiency testing surveys, alternate assessment, Q-Tracks/Q-Probes/Q-Monitors program, correlation studies, calibration verification and competency of testing personnel.
n. Performs monthly review of quality control statistics for accuracy, trends and shifts, and responds accordingly to maintain compliance with CAP standards; assists Medical Technologist II with IQCP compliance.
o. Prepares testing turnaround time reports and statistics for stroke rapid response, chest pain troponin, trauma, Oncology, and Emergency Department. Implements improvement initiatives to ensure compliance with turnaround time thresholds.
p. Assists with the regulatory oversight of the validation and implementation of new testing and instrumentation.
q. Attends Quality Council to report and discuss the Lab's quality indicators and performance improvement initiatives; assists the Director with the annual evaluation of the Quality Management system.
r. Assists with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees, and properly completes training checklists to ensure new employee competence.
