Job Description

Summary Description:

Conducts laboratory testing and examination of tubing and samples to determine their physical properties in accordance with standard test methods (ASTM, ASME, ISO, etc.) and other duties as defined below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for compliance to the PCC Cardinal Rules of Safety and conformance to plant specific safety and work rules, including safe laboratory practices for handling of chemicals.
  • Responsible for adherence to the PCC Cardinal Rules of Quality, ISO 9001, ASME BPE, 3A, PED, ASNT NDT and applicable ASTM specifications.
  • Prepares & tests samples with mechanical, corrosion, metallurgical, and non-destructive testing.
  • Performs mechanical, corrosion, metallurgical, and non-destructive testing of metal products.
  • Prepares solutions using strong acids for etching and corrosion testing of metal products.
  • Conducts metallurgical examinations of product using optical microscopy.
  • Follows process to contain non-conforming material.
  • Assists in execution of corrective action for discrepant material.
  • Performs failure analysis to evaluate cause of product discrepancies.
  • Performs analysis of samples to support product disposition.
  • Prepare sample analysis reports for customers.
  • Reviews customer and industry specification lab requirements for feasibility.
  • Supports Customer and Notified Body inspections, audits & nonconformance response activities.
  • Supports production regarding process improvement projects or experiments.
  • Assists Quality dept. personnel to maintain the measurement gage calibration system.
  • Coordinates external calibration of measurement gages, including ET reference standards.
  • Performs internal calibrations of measurement gages.
  • Performs measurement gage repeatability & reproducibility studies.
  • Setup and verify measurement gages used by production personnel.
  • Train personnel on gages, inspection, and testing procedures and equipment.
  • Ensures required testing is properly reported to permit final product certification.
  • Supports operations with quality inspection and test questions and concerns.
  • Responsible to verify router data against customer orders and ensure inspection and testing requirements are properly documented and executed.
  • Reviews testing records to evaluate what (if any) additional processing or testing needs to be performed for stock product to be used for non-standard customer orders.
  • Participates in the Internal Audit process as a qualified internal auditor.
  • Supports operational training and compliance regarding ISO requirements.
  • Supports 6S initiatives and takes responsibility as directed for associated projects in the laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Minimum associate degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school, two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Understanding of metal microstructure (grain structure, phases)
    • Strong grasp of mechanical properties of metals (strength, ductility, hardness)
    • Understanding of metal manufacturing processes (cold forming, welding, heat treatment)
  • Excellent recordkeeping and detail oriented.
  • Experience using MS Office Suite
  • Experience working in a lab environment, preparing and properly disposing of lab chemicals.
  • Experience operating lab equipment including optical microscope and tensile load frame.
  • Experience communicating technical concepts clearly using photographs and text.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Preferred to have experience with manufacturing of austenitic, ferritic, and duplex stainless steels and nickel alloys.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
