Position Summary:

Responsible to analyze and collect information through various modes such as personal interviews and news briefings to prepare news reports. Monitor daily events locally, nationally and internationally and assist others to gather current events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepare written article reports to keep the public informed about daily, weekly or monthly happenings.
• Coordinate with newspaper editor and fellow reporters to develop story ideas for report writing.
• Maintain relations with all news sources on a daily basis to develop story ideas and compile appropriate reports.
• Perform research and write national, state, tribal and local news.
• Analyze and ensure accurate and crisp news reporting to avoid ambiguity and redundancy.
• Collaborate with newspaper editor to improve story presentation.
• Work in assigned bear areas once every week to gather all local news.
• Coordinate with newspaper editor to obtain visual elements for each story with appropriate photos or graphics.
• Administer all news writing to meet deadlines.
• Attend weekly meetings and staff meetings to keep abreast of company policies and requirements.
• Maintain knowledge on latest events and news to obtain news coverage of important and pertinent issues.
• There are no fixed work schedules. Instead, newspaper journalists work according to the paper’s publication schedules, which are spread out across a 24-hour period – early morning, mid-morning, afternoon, evening and late or midnight editions are common across most newspapers.
• May be required to carry out any other related activities assigned by the editor, such as writing follow- up articles or special features, and ascertaining feedback or reactions from quoted sources or public authorities.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Must maintain professional demeanor during working hours.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
Four-year degree in journalism English, broadcasting or communications.
Two-year degree with 5 years of newspaper writing experience.

PREFERRED SKILLS

• Must be able to meet daily deadlines under pressure and deal effectively with simultaneous tasks.
• Reliable and punctual.
• Must be willing to work flexible hours and evenings and weekends.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Must possess a valid driver’s license required to do travel.
