Responsibilities will include assisting the doctors, working directly with patients to obtain patient information, including chief complaint, medical / family history and medications lists as well as performing testing such as tonometry, refraction, visual acuity, and slit lamp examinations.


In this position you will…


  • Assist the physician with routine eye examinations and occasional minor surgical procedures.
  • Open and clean examination rooms, scan paperwork, check drug supplies weekly for expiration dates. Autoclave all instruments as necessary.
  • Triage telephone calls and tasks for clinic and physician. Place calls and takes messages for physicians. Communicate with pharmacies for patient’s prescription refills. Return calls to patients as instructed by the physician.
  • History Taking: Must obtain record identifying information of the patient’s chief complaint and history of present illness. Obtain and record past ocular history, family history, medical history, allergies, and details of present medication.
  • Basic Skills and Lensometry: Methods of measuring and recording distance and near visions in children and adults including pinhole and color vision testing, checking pupils, motility, and confrontation visual fields. Various methods of lensometry including auto and manual forms.
  • Ophthalmic Patient Services: Instillation of topical eye drops, and ointments. Drug knowledge of drops and ointments used in clinic and prescribed including advantages and disadvantages. Knowledge of other tests such as Amsler grid, Schirmer tear test, etc.
  • Pediatric Examination: including HOTV, LEA symbols, stereo testing, worth 4 DOT testing. Ability to administer drops in children’s eyes.
  • User-level maintenance as prescribed by the manufacturers of the common ophthalmic instruments such as the visual acuity monitors, muscle lights, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopes, phoropters, retinoscopes, lensometers and sterilization of surgical instruments.
  • Basic knowledge of types and relative merits of hard and soft contact lenses and proper handling of contact lenses.
  • Basic Tonometry: Basic principles and techniques, sources of error, advantages and disadvantages of applanation, tonopen, and l-care tonometry. Methods of cleaning and sterilization of tonometers.
  • Elementary knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the visual system. Elementary knowledge of the refractive errors of the eye and more common diseases affecting the visual system. Knowledge that the visual apparatus may be affected by systemic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, malignant diseases, atherosclerosis, blood diseases and generalized infections.
  • Clinical Optics: Refraction techniques including auto and manual versions with spherical and Jackson cross cylinder refinement. Near visual acuity with phoropter.
  • Scribing: Assist physician during exam by documenting information and diagnosis as directed by physician. Check the encounter form for accuracy and completeness before directing the patient to the checkout area.
  • Ensure the patient’s chart is complete and the physician has documented what he has prescribed, and the treatment recommended.
  • Help in other areas as assigned by the office manager.
  • Assist with patient education.
  • Keep the physician informed of any changes in the appointment schedule.
  • Must be willing to float/travel to any office area that may need coverage to accommodate clinic schedule.
  • Create and maintain positive and routine communication with co-employees, management, patients, visitors, and physicians.

Must enjoy working with people, able to multi-task, and demonstrate strong organizational skills with attention to detail is key.

Qualifications:


  • Computer proficiency

Education:


  • Graduation from an accredited High School or equivalent
  • Course in medical terminology preferred


Experience:


  • One year work experience, preferably in a medical assisting position
