Paralegal

Smith & Wesson seeks a full-time Paralegal to support the Legal Department in Maryville, Tennessee. Experience with intellectual property, contracts, litigation, and corporate governance is a plus. Please note the responsibilities listed below provide an accurate idea of what the job will entail and prioritize. Experience with the essential duties listed is a plus but not a requirement for consideration. This is an in-office, non-remote opportunity.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist and support all aspects of the management, monitoring, protection, and enforcement of the Company's patent, trademark, copyright, and domain name portfolios
  • Maintain and update company intellectual property databases and physical files
  • Schedule meetings, organize and prepare meeting materials, and draft meeting minutes
  • Serve as a point of contact for internal clients on intellectual property matters and for outside intellectual property counsel and legal assistants
  • Prepare patent amortization reports utilizing invoices from outside counsel and other documentation
  • Assist with intellectual property licensing issues
  • Review marketing and advertising materials for compliance with intellectual property and legal standards
  • Conduct training to internal clients on intellectual property matters (including non-disclosure agreements)
  • Manage non-disclosure agreement submissions
  • Manage outside inventor submissions, as well as internal patent disclosures and new trademark/copyright requests
  • May be called upon from time to time to assist the Legal Department in connection with its needs related to contracts, litigation, SEC reporting generally and Section 16 reporting specifically, and corporate governance, including managing the Company's board of directors' portal
  • Travel: Please note some travel to and from Springfield, MA, will be required during the first month of employment. Periodic travel might be required after the first month. All travel is paid for or reimbursed by the Company
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience and Education

  • Paralegal Certificate or minimum 2-3 years of paralegal experience (acquired either in-house or at a law firm)
  • Experience with intellectual property, contracts, litigation, and corporate governance matters a plus

  • Excellent writing and oral communications skills are essential
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with all levels of the Company
  • Must be able to work independently, self-motivated, and self-disciplined
  • Must be willing to adapt to change as well as being capable of driving change
  • Must have strong business acumen and the ability to understand and respond to business issues and needs

Language and Computer Skills

  • Must have a strong command of the English language, in both verbal and written communications
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint is a must

  • Complete all necessary training as required by assigned department and position
  • Participate in and follow all company initiatives

Miscellaneous:

  • Normal office environment conditions apply to this role. Must be able to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time
  • The use of personal protective equipment may be required when on a factory floor
  • All employees are required to apply ergonomic principles to all job tasks
  • Within our manufacturing facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Education

  • Paralegal Certificate required
  • Minimum 3 years' paralegal experience (acquired either in-house or at a law firm) directly related to intellectual property matters, with an emphasis on trademarks required
  • Experience with contracts, litigation, and corporate governance matters a plus

  • Flexible work schedule required, with the ability to work evenings and weekends, with or without advanced notice.

Location

  • This role will be based in Knoxville, TN. Smith & Wesson announced in September 2021 that it intends to relocate its headquarters from Springfield, MA to Knoxville in 2023. We expect that the IP Paralegal role will be based in Knoxville in 2022, although some travel to Springfield may be required.
  • Local candidates are preferred, although relocation support may be offered to the right candidate.
