About HRA

Human Rights Activists (HRA) formerly known as Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI) is a leading non-governmental organization active in monitoring and documenting the situation of human rights inside of Iran and advocating for the broadened use of strategic and creative pathways to accountability for serious, repeat human rights violators inside of the country. HRA’s news arm, Human Rights Activists News Agency, (see link here in Farsi and English) publishes several daily reports on the situation of human rights and has long been one of the most cited sources for government and intergovernmental institutions as well as domestic and international print and broadcast media outlets. HRA’s work is regularly cited in published reports by United Nations experts including the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran as well as annual governmental reports such as the U.S. Report on International Religious Freedom and the U.S. Country Reports on Human Rights Practices. HRA is based in the Washington D.C. area with colleagues working remotely around the globe.

About the Position

HRA is seeking 2 part-time Iran Researchers to work alongside the Head of Iran Research providing hands-on research assistance and administrative support to the Research team by ​​collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data and opinions to explore issues, solve problems, and predict trends.

Responsibilities

Provide research assistance and administrative support to the Head of Iran Research as needed

Assist the Head of Iran Research in monitoring human rights conditions and documenting abuses by State and non-state actors by collecting and analyzing information from a wide variety of sources including through books, open source investigations, and interviews; when appropriate provide written analyses and write-ups of interviews and investigations

Assist in the development of contacts that will help to expand HRA’s monitoring capabilities and access to information; facilitate meetings with sources that are able to provide information as needed

Follow up on specific cases as requested by leadership

Under the guidance of the Head of Iran Research and Program Manager write concise briefs detailing information collected on an annual basis

Assist in the preparation of published reports

Perform other tasks as required.

Qualifications

A degree in international relations, law, journalism, communications, public relations, Middle East Studies, social sciences or studies relating to the country relevant or a related discipline, or equivalent working experience, is required

Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of experience working as a research assistant with an NGO/INGO is required

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Persian are required

Good knowledge of content editing tools such as Canva is desired

Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team is required
