Job description
POSITION: Part-Time Librarian I; Librarian I; Library Services; (Haverhill Campus); 22.5 hours/week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 9am - 2:30pm; Friday 9am - 2pm; AFSCME Unit I
SUMMARY: Librarian I employees classify and catalog books and other library materials; select new books and materials needed for the collection; aid library users in utilizing facilities; participate in the development of library policy; maintain files and records; and perform related work as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Processes and catalogs library materials for Haverhill and Lawrence campus libraries.
- Selects and monitors new books and materials to be obtained or purchased, and communicates with agency personnel about the acquisition of new library materials.
- Maintains print and digital files and records related to the acquisition of library materials
- Records the arrival of periodicals into the collections and places faculty-requested items on course reserve.
- Serves as Technical Services liaison for HELM/FLO consortia

Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science including cataloging and classification.
- Knowledge of the types and applications of library classifications and cataloging systems such as Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress.
- Knowledge of library reference materials and services including dictionaries, atlases, almanacs, bibliographies, catalogs, etc.
- Knowledge of library filing systems, such as alphabetic, classified and chronological.
- Knowledge of the terminology, coding, symbols and standard abbreviations used in library work.
- Knowledge of types and uses of library equipment.
- Knowledge of the methods and techniques of preserving library materials.
- Knowledge of the methods and techniques of mending and repairing books and other library materials.
- Knowledge of the methods of general report writing.
- Skill in mending and repairing books and other library materials.
- Ability to determine proper format and procedure for assembling items of information.
- Ability to gather information by examining records and documents.
- Ability to assemble items of information in accordance with established procedures.
- Ability to work accurately with names, numbers, codes and/or symbols.
- Ability to explain the policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
- Ability to understand and apply agency procedures and guidelines governing the purchase of supplies, materials and equipment.
- Ability to deal tactfully with others.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written expression.
- Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
- Ability to write clearly and concisely.
- Ability to prepare general reports.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to follow written or oral instructions.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred
- Experience working with and supporting a culturally diverse population
BACKGROUND CHECK: Candidates will be required to pass a CORI and SORI check as a condition of employment.
Additional Information:
SALARY: $1,151.50 - $1,632.44 biweekly ($29,938.90 to $42,443.54 annually). Pay grade 16; An appointment from outside the bargaining unit (AFSCME) must start at Step I of the range.
