Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a motivated individual to serve as a plumber at Centralia Correctional Center. The successful candidate will perform journey level plumbing work. In addition, the successful candidate will supervise individuals in custody and conduct on-the-job training to help them develop plumbing trade skills. Job Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs and maintains hot and cold-water supply lines, sewer pipe, drain, waste and vent pipes and appliances such as water closets, lavatories, urinals, showers, tubs, faucets and all fitting and pipe coverings.
  • Instructs and supervises individuals in custody workers.
  • Coordinates new construction plumbing at the institution such as installing the fixtures, water lines, air lines, low pressure steam lines, floor drains, sewer drains, sewer lines.
  • Performs or directs trenching, excavating and back filling operations.
  • Melts and caulks lead joints, using gas-fired furnaces, blow torches, caulking chisels and cutting and welding equipment,
  • Coordinates operation of the plumbing shop.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires possession of a current valid plumber's license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
  • Requires the possession of a valid certificate as a Cross-Connection Control Device Inspector (CCCDI) or the acquisition of the certificate within the probationary period of employment.

Preferred Qualifications (in order of significance)

  • Prefers at least four (4) years of plumbing experience.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of coordinating new construction plumbing.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of trenching, excavating, and back filling operations.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year installing, water heaters, bypasses, supply and return lines and pressure control valves.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of maintaining plumbing inventory.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of working with blueprints.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of repairing of hot and cold water lines, water heaters, toilets, sinks, sewer, drain waste and vent piping.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of supervising individual in custody setting.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year working in a correctional facility.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year working with individuals in a custody setting.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the department will continue to enforce the zero-tolerance drug testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
