The qualifications for the role of president of Legacy Emanuel Medical Center require the rarest and best in terms of professional accomplishment, talent and skill. To start: A graduate degree in hospital or business administration is required. Also: a decade or more of diverse and increasingly high-level health care or administrative experience. This includes extensive work developing and implementing effective operational and financial systems, thriving in competitive markets and mastering the art and science of communication with staff at every level. The interactions with employees are not about mere surface likeability; rather, they’re about a demonstrated track record of managing people with authenticity, helping them set goals and understanding how to support, evaluate and direct employees so they can fulfill their potential and help the hospital achieve its goals and standards. The president must have a deep understanding of the most current developments and trends in health care, domestically and internationally.
About Legacy Emanuel Medical Center
Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, located in North Portland, is a local and regional leader in serious clinical illness and injury. It is one of only two Level 1 trauma centers in Oregon and home to the only burn center between Seattle and Sacramento. The hospital is also home to the Life Flight Network, the first of its kind instituted on the West Coast. Legacy Emanuel is a 554-bed facility that provides a full range of services, including around-the-clock expertise for critical health issues, experts in trauma, heart care, burns, significant wounds, stroke, brain surgery and more. Legacy Emanuel also houses Randall Children’s Hospital and Unity Center for Behavioral Health, one of the finest and most comprehensive children’s health care centers in the region. The sheer breadth of these services makes Legacy Emanuel central to the health of the Portland and Vancouver community and plays a critical role in caring for the people of the entire Pacific Northwest.

- Direct, manage and guide the assigned functions including planning, budgeting, control and management/development of subordinate staff.
- Coordinate all defined areas of accountability for the hospital to optimize services and costs.
- Working with peers, medical staff, and other leaders and groups, helps develop long-range plans. Contributes to the development of the overall corporate business plan through proposing and advocating new opportunities.
- Responsible for demonstrating and maintaining executive behavior and performance.
Education: Masters degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration or related field or equivalent experience required
Experience:
- Ten years of diverse and progressively more responsible health care and/or related administrative experience
- Experience in developing and implementing effective operational and financial systems and controls
- Experience in a competitive, managed care market
Knowledge/Skills:
- In-depth knowledge and experience in developing, implementing and managing administrative systems to support divisional/departmental mission, goals and objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to manage people in setting goals, giving appropriate support, evaluating, directing, and holding employees accountable while maintaining high morale and productivity.
- Excellent communication skills: ability to interact with people in a meaningful way at all levels in the operating division, system, health care industry, and community.
- Articulate, able to listen, and responsive to legitimate concerns.
- Must have a thorough understanding of current developments and trends in healthcare management and areas of defined accountability
