JOB TITLE: PROPERTY EVIDENCE/FORENSICS GRADE: DC-135
RISK: SPECIAL
DEPARTMENT: POLICE FLSA: NON-EXEMPT
SALARY: $18.40 TO $27.61
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
This position is responsible for the response to and investigation of crime scenes, evaluation of the scene, and uses various types of equipment. Responsible for developing securing, and packaging physical evidence for scientific evaluation and comparison, preparing detailed reports on the observations and activities at the scene for the law enforcement officer responsible for the investigation of the crime. Court appearances for testimony regarding the findings and processing methods used at the scene.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Collects, preserves, processes, and evaluates physical evidence from crime scenes and persons to reconstruct the chain of events for specific crimes. (physical evidence analysis)
- Processes crime scenes and evidence for latent prints using powders, chemicals, and laser techniques
- Diagrams and measures crime scenes for reconstruction purposes.
- Documents investigations and examinations with written reports in a clear and concise manner.
- Provides witness testimony in court proceedings.
- Constructs computerized facial composites and computerized crime scene diagrams for reconstruction of a crime.
- Operates 35 mm, digital, and video cameras for the purpose of documenting crime scene and evidence.
- Attends and documents autopsies of deceased persons.
- Performs routine office tasks such as typing, filing, faxing, telephoning, and photocopying.
- Must exhibit a general working knowledge of crime scene investigative safety issues.
- Operates assigned vehicles and equipment in a safe manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Extensive knowledge of rules of evidence using modern procedures and methods employed in crime analysis
- Knowledge in the area of photography, to include the utilization of various types of cameras, films, and accessories in the area of crime scene processing to include the discovery and recovery of latent prints, blood, hair fiber, and other materials.
- Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations and methods pertaining to the acquisition, receipt, control, and disposition of evidence and other property.
- Ability to physically perform essential functions as required.
- Skill in the care and use of fire arms.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This position requires an Associate’s degree, vocational technical degree, or specialized training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education with emphasis in Criminology,
Law Enforcement, Forensic Sciences, Criminal Justice or a closely related field.

Physical Ability: Must be in good physical condition as determined by a medical exam provided by a licensed physician hired by the City. Employees are required to stand, walk, run, use hands handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, physically lift and/or move more than 50 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move more than 125 pounds.
Sensory Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, night vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are frequently performed outside in weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving vehicles, and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, and with explosives, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
