Job Description

Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial, and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking an individual to fill the role of PT Housing Assistant. The function of the Housing Assistant is to work with other staff members and with student residents to facilitate an environment within the residence hall that contributes to the overall intellectual, social, physical, moral, and cultural development of the students.

Job duties included but are not limited to:
  • Maintain the student living conditions by educating and encouraging students to respect the physical unit (neatness and safety), to maintaining a reasonable noise level, and to respect the rights of other students.
  • Make sure that Housing Policies are followed by all student residents.
  • Assistance in orientation, room choosing, opening and closing of residence halls, maintenance, housekeeping, filing pertinent reports, and changes.
  • Assist Real Estate Coordinator in making minor repairs and minor housekeeping in preparing vacant units for occupancy.
  • Assist Real Estate Coordinator with general record keeping and collecting rent payments.
  • If called upon, work with Faculty Advisors, College Faculty, or college staff to assist students with personal concerns, academic deficiencies, or academic difficulties.
  • Be available, visible, and responsive to the residents in on campus housing.
  • Assist with roommate agreements; mediate conflict in an unbiased manner.
  • Promote a safe and healthy environment using a team approach with Facilities, Campus Safety, student governance bodies, and other campus partners.
  • Assist with opening and closing of on-campus housing, preparing units for occupancy, the selection process of new team members, and room change process.
  • Complete bi-monthly health and safety inspections and key inventories for all assigned rooms.
  • Engage in an additional area of responsibility on the staff team such as administrative tasks, budgeting, staff development, and general maintenance. These specific areas may change from year to year.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of general record keeping practices
  • Experience in handling monetary transactions (i.e. rental payments)
  • Experience in minor housekeeping duties and general household maintenance
  • Knowledge of basic administrative and budgeting tasks
  • Ability to enforce housing policies and mediate conflict in an unbiased manner
  • Demonstrated professionalism and excellent customer service skills
  • Strong written and verbal skills required
