Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as the frontline supervisor for the Chicago Lab Microbiology unit. This unit performs highly complex microbiological testing on various infectious diseases and hospital acquired infections. This supervisor will oversee operations in a large clinical testing unit and be responsible for day-to-day operations and workflow.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as working supervisor.
  • Supervise staff performing experiments on clinical isolates for the identification of various infectious diseases.
  • Using complex equipment and procedures, perform supplemental/confirmatory to help resolve indeterminate tests following standard operating procedures and testing algorithms.
  • Research new diagnostic laboratory procedures under consideration for lab implementation.
  • Direct staff training and assessments in all procedures used in the microbiology laboratory including rabies.
  • Ensure participation in externally approved proficiency testing programs which serve to measure the quality of reagents and technical proficiency.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires a bachelor’s degree in one of the chemical, biological, medical technology, or clinical laboratory sciences from a recognized college or university.

2. Requires four years of progressively responsible administrative clinical laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Two years experience in quality control and maintenance of complex laboratory equipment.

2. Two years experience working with a laboratory information management system (LIMS) in testing clinical diagnostic samples.

3. Thorough knowledge of the regulations governing Clinical Diagnostic testing.

4. Thorough knowledge and skill in safety procedures for working with various pathogens and threat agents.

5. One year experience with various computer applications including Microsoft products.
