Full-Time Racial Justice Organizer
ECCO seeks a dynamic, faith/values-driven organizer to help us build our powerful faith-led social justice efforts and lead our racial justice organizing work in predominantly White communities across Essex County, supporting White community members to engage in the work of justice by following the leadership of People of Color and immigrants.
Responsibilities
Organize congregations across Essex County with a focus on Salem, Beverly, Swampscott, Marblehead, and Cape Ann. This organizer will focus on working with congregations and community groups whose constituency is predominantly White. This includes recruiting, coaching, and training individuals and congregational teams of ECCO leaders, and working with clergy to recruit more congregations and leaders to join ECCO.
Coach and support local multiracial/multi-faith issue teams of ECCO leaders working together on housing, immigration, and criminal justice reform to achieve their campaign goals. This involves holding 8-15 one-on-one conversations a week with leaders and clergy to develop leaders and move forward our work.in community organizing skills such as research meetings, creative public actions, one to one meetings and narrative shaping for each campaign.
Facilitate antiracism training and conversation at ECCO’s multiracial community meetings and in gatherings of our White Caucus, where White community leaders come together to examine and address racism and White Supremacy Culture within ECCO.
Support ECCO’s justice efforts through campaign strategy, capacity-building, and development of prophetic narrative.
Weave systems of accompaniment support for community members in crisis: Invite, encourage and support White and/or wealthy community members in ECCO to leverage their networks and resources in support of poor or undocumented community members in crisis. This assistance often includes financial resources, support finding housing, and accompaniment to immigration appointments, or housing.
Participate in ECCO’s fundraising efforts, staff development and administrative activities. This includes facilitation of staff meetings, co-planning of large fundraising efforts and events, and regular data entry to track one to one engagements and group meetings.
Participate in campaigns and training with MCAN, our statewide network, and Faith in Action, our national network.
Preferred Skills and Traits
- 3-5 years professional experience in community organizing and/or community-building
- Strong relational skills; ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to identify, train and develop potential leaders
- Ability to work with people in crisis and engage them in community building
- Commitment to grassroots leadership and bottom-up organizing
- Strong oral and written communications skills
- Responsible, able to work independently as well as part of a strong staff team
- Strong political, cultural and racial justice analysis
- Capacity to think strategically
- Solid understanding of one's own journey around faith/religion/values
- Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese is a plus but not required
Position entails considerable evening and occasional weekend work. A car is highly-encouraged.
Salary range is $50,000-60,000/year for full time, based on experience. Benefits include health insurance and exceptional paid time off for all employees’ personal rest and restoration: one week per month plus one month off in the summer, totaling 15 weeks of paid time off per year.
