Job description

Responsible for assisting with recreational programs, special events, tournaments, games and field usage, and any maintenance and repair of grounds, parks, and athletic fields as necessary. Work is performed under the supervision of the Athletic Coordinator. Weekly hours vary and include daytime, evening, and some weekend hours depending on program needs. May supervise contractual instructors, coaches, and volunteers.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Regular, reliable on-site attendance necessary.
  • Assists with the implementation of a variety of athletic, recreation, playground and day camp activities, programs, services, and events.
  • Drags, rakes, waters, and lines fields; moves pitching mounds; and other field maintenance as necessary.
  • Operates ground maintenance machinery and equipment as needed.
  • Works with supervisor to prepare facilities and materials for programs and events.
  • Opens and closes recreation facility, as needed.
  • Collects litter and garbage and maintains grounds, facilities, restrooms, and field lights.
  • Enforces program, facility and activity rules and regulations.
  • Operate county vehicle to drive to sites to supervise weekly athletic events.
  • Acts as a resource and contact in area of expertise for outside agencies and private citizens requesting information or assistance on programs or facilities in the recreation department.
  • Answers phones and relays program/activity information to the public.
  • Maintains and documents inventory of various supplies and equipment.
  • Registers participants using Recreation Management software.
  • Maintains attendance records, rosters, and reports pertaining to recreation facilities and events.
  • Maintains proper documentation and appropriate records for all programs/events offered.
  • Candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes mainly nights and weekends.
  • Performs clerical and other related work as assigned.

EDUCATION
High school diploma or GED; some related experience or equivalent training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare written reports.
  • Skilled in public relations and public service experience.
  • Must be able to maintain good relations with all staff, participants, and other concerned groups. Must have the ability to work with and cooperate with participants, associates, and the public, and enforce rules and regulations.
  • Must be able to manage time effectively, show work initiative and work independently.
  • Must be available to work a flexible work schedule, including days, nights, and weekends.
  • Reliable, consistent attendance is essential to this position.
  • Ability to drive county vehicles.
  • Must obtain First Aid and CPR certifications within six months of employment.
  • Prior to employment satisfactory checks on the following must be obtained: criminal record, Child Protective Services, driving record and employment reference checks.
  • Solid computer skills, to include Microsoft and email applications, ability to learn and use data base software for management of recreation programs.
  • Must enjoy working outdoors and with all age groups.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • CPR and First Aid certifications (must acquire within 6 months of employment)
  • Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
  • Prior to employment satisfactory checks on the following must be obtained: criminal record, Child Protective Services, Sexual Offense Register, driving record, drug and alcohol test, and employment reference check

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone keypad; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste and smell.
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. Must be able to walk for long period, sometimes on uneven ground. The employee frequently lifts light (15-20 pounds) and occasionally lifts heavy objects (+50 pounds). The employee climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to drive a vehicle at all times and hours of the day.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions such as extreme heat, wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud since offices are next to a gymnasium. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
