Job description
We are looking for a motivated and independent applicant to provide technical support for a variety of developmental biology projects in the Petrella lab. Our lab studies the development and function of the germline in
C. elegans. The current lab NIH funded project looks specifically at the role of cell death in protecting developing egg cells when animals are stressed. Our work is at the intersection of climate change, developmental biology, evolutionary biology, stress biology and fertility. Applicants will be expected to be have good communication skills and work well with other lab members and the PI in both the laboratory setting and lab meetings. Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain worm stocks and other reagent collections
- Perform C. elegans experiments on an independent project using molecular biology, fluorescent and light microscopy.
- Keep accurate laboratory records, communicate data summaries and analysis, and maintain digital records of data acquisition.
- Communicate clearly and in a timely manner with the PI and other lab members about lab experiments and undergraduate student progress.
- Oversee and train undergraduate student workers with projects and plate pouring
- Help with laboratory organization of reagents and stocks.
- Prepare buffers and other solutions, and determine correct molar concentrations.
- Attend laboratory functions throughout the week including laboratory meetings, departmental seminars, and journal clubs.
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or high school education (some college preferred) with 1-2 years of related lab experience. Must be willing to work flexible hours as necessary. Successful candidate will be expected to exhibit individual initiative, work independently; be technically proficient and accurate; effectively communicate in both written reports and presentations; initiate and ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures; and possess attention to detail.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Two semesters or one summer of undergraduate research experience. Previous experience with basic molecular biology techniques, fluorescence microscopy, or worm (
C. elegans) biology/genetics strongly preferred.
