Job Summary and Description:
EPRI's Grid Operations and Planning group performs R&D on cutting-edge transmission and distribution operations and planning issues, while working with utility and system operator members. This position will provide technical expertise and analytic services to the group for both existing and new studies and research projects related to forecasting, renewable power modeling (solar/wind) and data analysis. This is an opportunity to join an innovative group of engineers and scientists developing and testing new methods for operating and planning the power system. There are significant growth opportunities to learn new skills, get experience in a growing area, and develop and lead new research areas.
The Ideal Candidate should have some or all of the following skills and experience:
  • Proficiency with Python and related libraries for data analysis, e.g., numpy and pandas, data visualization, e.g., matplotlib, plotly, machine-learning, e.g., scikit, tensorflow, keras
  • Experience with building machine-learning classifier and regression models and analyzing their performance with different metrics
  • Experience with short-term forecasting of load and/or renewable energy (solar or wind)
  • Experience working with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) data
  • Familiarity with resource-to-power modeling of solar and wind using open-source tools, e.g., PVLIB or NREL SAM
  • Familiarity working with datasets in a variety of formats (e.g., loading data from files, merging data from multiple files, calculating statistics and plotting), including gridded datasets in binary formats such as netCDF, HDF5, Zarr
  • Experience accessing data from a variety of sources, including FTP servers, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and cloud storage such as AWS S3
  • Familiarity with software development using version control, e.g., git branches and code reviews on Merge Requests
  • Experience working as part of a team of contributors with different skillsets
  • Experience presenting results to diverse audiences, including as slides and written reports

Additional Job Information:
Performs complex engineering/ scientific analysis with moderate direction and supervision. Works directly with EPRI staff and moderate interaction with members and industry.
  • Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team
  • May conduct independent research
  • Assists Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations
Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must have satisfied requirements of entry level engineer/scientist and have 2-3 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
  • Present research externally
  • Understand how work fits across technical area
  • Requires supervision and guidance to conduct specific research tasks and complete projects
  • Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research
  • May participate in multiple projects
  • Individual contributor
The salary range for this position is $76,250 USD to $103,150 USD annually.
This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program. The amount of incentive varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan.
This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s standard employee benefit programs, which currently include the following: medical, dental, vision, 401k, STD/LTD and paid family leave, life and accident insurance, paid time off (flexible vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay).
