The Youth Care Counselor is responsible for acting as a positive role model, and for the treatment and care of children or adolescents. This position involves guidance in personal responsibility, safety and respect; engaging youth in daily school program, work and study habits, life skills; and engaging youth in pro-social and recreational activities.

Openings are available in our Intensive, Stabilization, Assessment and Treatment (ISAT) units and in our non-ISAT units. Available openings at the time of hire dictate the hourly starting rate which ranges from $18.50/hour-to-$25.00/hour (ISAT only).

All Youth Care Employees receive a $2,000 sign-on bonus.

General Responsibilities:

· To be a therapeutic agent using counseling skills; to structure and coordinate the daily routine for each youth.

· To ensure appropriate care and treatment for each youth at all times.

· To promote a positive environment focusing on personal safety, respect and responsibility.

· Serve as a Case Manager of a group of assigned youth for Life Skills, report writing, and other basic needs.

· Manage behavioral problems and disturbances by utilizing prescribed behavior management techniques.

· Responsible for Unit coverage 9:00PM - 11:00 PM one or more nights each week.

· Record all pertinent information in the daily log, write Incident Report and complete Unit program progress (goal) and other necessary paperwork at the end of each shift.

· Plan and execute diverse social activities that are a part of the therapeutic living process

· Pass the HHS training program and be knowledgeable of the Unit Behavioral Management System, Physical Restraint procedures, Unit Programs, Phase/Level System, Life Skills Program. The ability to physically manage the youth is a requirement of employment.

· Be aware of all medical procedures and health needs of the youth in the Unit. And, maintain certification in First Aid, CPR and HWC.

· Adhere to the Harmony Hill School Code of Ethics

· Be sensitive to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.

Qualifications:

· A Bachelor’s degree or actively pursuing a degree is highly preferred.

· At minimum a high school diploma along with 1-3 years of relevant equivalent experience managing children and youth in a mental health or residential treatment setting is required in lieu of advanced education.

· Experience ‘running a shift’ and training and supporting co-workers in a residential treatment environment is key to achieve success in this role.

· Must be able to interact well with others in a team environment, communicate professionally and understand and following all policies and procedures.

· Must be able to pass our physical intervention –Safety Care training.

· All staff are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination at the time of hire.

· All candidates must be 18 years of age and clear Rhode Island state as well as federal background checks.

· Must have a valid, non-suspended, non-expired driver license and a good driving record.

· All training is available on site.
