The Department of Natural Resources, South Puget Sound Region is looking for an Engineering Aide (Engineering Aide 1) to join our Region road maintenance team. This is a permanent full time position with a duty station in Enumclaw, Washington. The South Puget Sound Region encompasses more than 361,000 acres of DNR-managed state trust lands and has 2370 miles of forest roads, including over 110 bridges. Trust Land is primarily working forest which provides a stream of revenue to public schools and other trust beneficiaries through timber harvest and other forest products.

What we will trust you with: This position is responsible for supporting the Forest Roads engineering program by assisting engineers and heavy equipment crew with Public Works contracts, minor road repairs, project and site planning, roadside spray and limited heavy equipment operation, including the following duties:
  • Working with heavy equipment staff, state lands engineers, and land managers with logistical planning and mobilization for forest road maintenance and repair projects.
  • Inspect forest road infrastructure for maintenance needs and prepare work orders for scheduling crew and obtaining needed materials.
  • Transport heavy equipment and materials to forest road maintenance projects and assist as needed.
  • Ensure roadside spray equipment (spray vehicle and ancillary equipment) and product stock is maintained.

Duties

Responsibilities:
As the Road Maintenance Engineering Aide, this position is responsible for assisting Engineers in planning and surveying for complex forest road projects. Inspect forest roads for road maintenance needs, prepares work orders to accomplish identified maintenance needs, assist Heavy Equipment crew in mobilization including delivery of equipment and materials. Operate roadside spray truck and ensure unit is properly maintained.


  • Assist in site surveys for complex infrastructure projects.
  • Identify location and estimate needs for repair of minor maintenance projects.
  • Comply Limited Public Works projects.
  • Inspect culverts, gates, signs, surfacing and other road structures for needed maintenance.
  • Operate and ensure Region spray apparatus is maintained.
  • Ensure adequate product stock and supplies are maintained.
  • Assist in developing roadside spray schedule.
  • Assist in developing basic plan sheets.
  • Prepare road maintenance work orders for agency crews.
  • Provide information and assist in data entry for production tracking.
  • Deliver equipment and materials to road maintenance work sites.
  • Maintain material inventories.
  • Occasionally may be asked to work weekends, holidays, and regular scheduled off days as the need arises.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • One year minimum experience working on forest road maintenance projects.
  • Understand the principles and practices of the Engineering field as it relates to road, drainage and structure design.
  • Understanding of Washington State Forest Practices Act and Rules, Washington State Labor and Industries rules and associated policies, practices and procedures of
    Agency.
  • Knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of heavy equipment used on Forest Roads.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate typical forest road heavy equipment.
  • Basic skills in WORD and Excel.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks correctly and shift focus easily.
  • Excellent Communication skills and ability and willingness to work as a member of a team.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Must be able to work alone in wet mountainous terrain and use radio communication reliably. Often alone, driving forest roads and traversing on foot in steep, wet, mountainous terrain.
  • May be required to travel and stay away from home overnight due to project locations. Required to travel as work duties dictate.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn other software, including AutoDesk suite, ESRI ArcGIS.
  • Washington State Class A CDL.
  • WA State Pesticide Applicators License or ability to obtain one within 1 year of employment.
