Position Description

School Counselors assist students manage and/or overcome mental and emotional issues so that students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment and achievement.

The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties, knowledge or skills:

Responsibilities/Essential Duties:

  • Adhere to the Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility
  • Ensures safety of students
  • Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns
  • Consult with parents, teacher, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students
  • Implement a comprehensive appraisal process by: a. selecting and administering appropriate ability, achievement, and interests tests, b. visiting with students and interview interested adults, and c. interpreting results to students, teacher, administrators, and parents
  • Update and maintain confidential student records, including cumulative transcripts and student files
  • Identify students with special needs and make appropriate recommendations and referrals
  • Implement an effective program of educational and career planning
  • Schedule opportunities for students to visit with resource persons about academic and career choices
  • Maintain a current library of career information, and assist students in using the information, and assist students in using the information effectively
  • Assist with enrollment and kindergarten round-up
  • Assist in a continuous program of student orientation
  • Assist in making recommendations for school curriculum and instructional practices
  • Assist with the activities of student organizations
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Principal, or other Administrative Staff.
  • Help students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Principal and as a resource person in in-service meetings and as a liaison to department teachers.
  • Support the value of education
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community
  • Work effectively with community organizations
  • Provides leadership in inter-departmental activities within the school
  • Makes evaluation reports upon request.

Qualifications/Certificates:

  • Bachelors degree in related field, Masters' Degree, preferred
  • CT Certification (068) School Counselor required
  • Experience working with a diverse student demographic
  • Bilingual(Spanish/English) a plus
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Windham Board of Education may find appropriate

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to assess and meet the academic, social and emotional needs of individual students.
  • Ability to prepare effective plans and maintain proper records
  • Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing, with a variety of people.
  • Ability to maintain classroom order.
  • Skill to incorporate reading/writing and higher order thinking skills into the daily routine.
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Organizational and problem solving skills
  • Excellent public relations skills

Days: Monday – Friday
Salary: In accordance with the WFT contract
