The Virginia State Laboratory, the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS), is one of the largest public consolidated laboratories in the United States. With over 200 scientific and support staff, DCLS provides chemical & microbiological testing services to local, state, and federal regulatory, environmental & public health agencies. Located in historic downtown Richmond, our laboratory is adjacent to the State Capitol grounds. Beaches, mountains, Colonial Williamsburg, and Washington D.C. are less than a two-hour drive.

The Department of General Services’ Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) is seeking a qualified laboratory professional to act as a Scientist within the Chemical Terrorism Response (CT) section of the Chemical Terrorism Response, Radiochemistry, Biomonitoring and Drug Testing Group at DCLS. The CT section performs testing on human urine, blood, serum, foods and other matrices, using mass spectrometry in response to the intentional or accidental exposure of individuals, the environment, and food to potentially hazardous chemicals. This position is grant funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and provides testing associated with the Laboratory Response Network and unknown hazardous material responses. This position will be responsible for analyzing samples, assisting with method development and validation, monitoring QA/QC procedures, maintaining accurate records and use and maintenance of instrumentation.

This position requires participation in a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule as part of the DCLS emergency response team.

This is a full-time restricted position funded by a federal grant and includes state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications
All potential candidate’s must posses the following minimum qualifications:
  • Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments requirements for testing personnel as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations (§493.1489)
  • Knowledge of the theory and application of chemical principles and analytical procedures
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, mechanical equipment, and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of performing, documenting, and interpreting QA and QC procedures, data, and results
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral formats
  • Experience compiling data, drawing conclusions and providing data interpretation
  • Willing to participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule and provide after-hours testing support for public health emergencies and surge exercises as part of the DCLS emergency response team
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices for the handling of chemical, microbiological, infectious or toxic materials, as applicable.
  • Knowledge necessary to independently perform moderate to high complexity testing and routine analysis.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Advanced degree in chemistry, physical or natural science
  • Work-related experience with GC/MS, LC/MS, and/or ICP-MS
  • Experience with method development and validation
  • Experience with sample/specimen accessioning and result reporting
  • Experience performing moderate to high complexity testing on clinical, environmental and/or food samples
  • Knowledge of mathematics and basic statistics
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience with equipment and instrumentation use and maintenance
  • Experience with chain of custody procedures
  • Knowledge and experience with complex computer interfaced instrumentation and computerized laboratory information management systems; spreadsheets, MS Office products, and laboratory software programs

This position requires participation in a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule as part of the DCLS emergency response team.

DCLS employees are designated as essential personnel. This designation requires DCLS employees to report to the workplace or at an assigned remote location during state authorized closings or delays (i.e. weather-related closures/delays, holidays, etc.), unless otherwise instructed by management.
