Summary/Objective

The Senior Associate Director for Residence Life is a live-on position that supports the Director of Residence Life in leading the Residence Life department. The Senior Associate Director is responsible for the direct supervision of 2 full-time Associate Directors, the Community Director for Diversity and Inclusion Programs, and the indirect supervision of 8 full-time Community Directors and over 200 student staff.
This position will oversee the Residence Life portion of the University CARE Network and works with Residence Life staff, Dean of Students Office, and Care Network team members to manage referrals for residential students. This position has decision-making/problem solving authority for the residence life portion of the CARE Network under the guidance of the Director of Residence Life.
The Senior Associate Director for Residence Life works collobratively with Residence Life team members, including two Associate Directors, two Assistant Directors, and two Coordinators. This position works in close collaboration with Community Directors and the Dean of Students Office to support the daily activities and needs of residential students.

Essential Functions

  • Student Development and CARE Support: Oversee the residence life portion of the university CARE Network, including referral assignments, monitoring and following up on incidents and/or students experiencing distress. Formulate intervention plans designed to minimize and/or resolve student issues. Maintain records and updates using the Care Network and Advocate database systems. Review and triage referred incident reports and assigned Care Network reports.
  • Leadership and Team Supervision: Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate two Associate Directors for Residence Life and the Senior Coordinator for Residential Diversity and Initaives to provide an environment conducive to living and learning. Meet with staff members individually and as a group to discuss their performance and professional development, and ensure appropriate cross training of direct reports occurs on many departmental functions. Provide leadership and direction for the development and implementation of First Year and Sophomore and Upper-Division Experience initiatives.
  • Residential Curriculum Development and Assessment: Provide leadership and direction for the development and implementation of First Year and Sophomore and Upper Division Experience initiatives. At the direction of the Director of Residence Life, co-develop a cohesive and integrated student development model that focuses on academic and co-curricular program support for residential students. Works to facilitate HRL’s educational priorities, themes, and associated learning outcomes for residential experience as it relates to the residential curriculum.
  • Administration: Respond to inquiries from students, staff, and families. Provide departmental leadership for high-level customer service and complex issues through problem identification and resolution, policy interpretation, and conflict mediation. As needed, coordinate departmental and/or divisional response to students and families. Represent the department and the Director of Residence Life on university committees, project teams, search committees, Develop and communicate departmental operating procedures.
  • On-Call Emergency Response/After Hours Responsibility: Provide on-call emergency coverage after hours for the resident population. Respond to a variety of student needs and coordinate response network within the department, as well as with other university departments. Provide assistance with after hours and weekend room assignments, staff selection, and staff training programs.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Directly supervises 3 full-time staff: two Associate Directors for Residence Life and the Community Director for Diversity and Inclusion Programs.

Work Environment

  • On-campus living and availability for after-hour and weekend response is required. Attendance at campus functions, student programs, and after-hours emergency response is often required.
  • The compensation package for this position includes a furnished apartment, all utilities paid (local phone, electricity, cable, internet access). All apartments are equipped with a washer and dryer.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Full-Time.
  • Exempt.

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, social work, or related field.
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ post-masters experience with experience in residence hall leadership, residential curriculum and/or program development and crisis management.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree or equivalent.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Full-time supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and its application, the law and higher education, case management models, evidence of an effective leadership style, and a background demonstrating success in working with students, parents, administrators, and faculty.
  • Evidence of organizational leadership and an ability to work collaboratively.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work outside of traditional business hours (i.e. M-F, 9a-5p).
