DETENTION DEPUTY
POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of routine and complex public safety work in the performance of the Detention Division, providing for the incarceration and well-being of pre-sentenced and sentenced inmates through care, custody and control.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office reserves the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of this job at any time. Not all responsibilities may be performed by all incumbents. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Works a rotating, 12-hour, uniformed shift in the performance of security patrols, inmate control, as a working part of a staff of employees engaged in the carrying out the goals and objectives of the Department and/or Detention Unit. These shifts include nights, weekends and holidays. The detention facility is opened 24/7, 365 days a year.
· Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance. Carries out a variety of tasks assigned by supervisors.
· Exercise immediate supervision over prisoners in all aspects of incarceration including but not limited to, their quarters, during the time in transports, until such time as the inmate is released or transferred.
· Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent.
· Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, and County, laws and ordinances;
· Prepares a variety of reports, forms and records including officer's Daily Log, inmate notes, incident reports, all forms for intake and release; inmate medical information; bonds, and mittimus; court orders and writs, etc.
· Coordinates activities with other officers or other County departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the Court Administrator and District Prosecutor's Office regarding cases, policies and procedures, as needed and assigned.
· Maintains contact with Sheriff's supervisory personnel to coordinate detention activities provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general information about Unit activities.
· Assist in escorting and transports of incarcerated inmates to and from courts, doctors, dentists, hospital, other jails, prisons, DRDC, and state mental health facilities, etc.
· Makes periodic inspections of the facility and inmates, guarding against injury to persons or property, prevent escape, and discover illness or injury.
· Exhibits the ability to physically subdue and control an unruly inmate. Must be able to communicate in high stressful situations and have the ability to de-escalate.
· Maintains shift reports and records in accordance with the policy and procedure manual post orders assuring the continued operation of the Detention Center.
· Maintains departmental equipment, supplies and facilities.
· Maintains professional contact with general public, court officials, and other County officials in the performance of detention center operating activities.
· Serves as a member of various employee committees, as requested.
· Performs all other appropriate duties and tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:
· Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
· Must be 21 years or older at the time of employment.
· Must be able to communicate in English, both written and orally.
· Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
· Personal computer proficiency and demonstrated ability to work effectively with Microsoft Office software.
· Some knowledge of modern detention principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
· Some skill in operating the tools and equipment listed below.
· Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.
· Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition.
· Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors.
· Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions, insuring the well-being of inmates and the ongoing operations of the Detention Center.
· Ability to use common-sense approach when problem solving.
· Ability to work as a team and help out fellow co-workers.
· Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
· Ability to meet the special requirements listed below. Requires the ability to listen to, read, understand and communicate the English language so that others are able to understand. This must be done both orally and in writing, at the level appropriate for the position held.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license without record of suspension or
· revocation in any state.
· No felony convictions and/or serious misdemeanor, disqualifying criminal histories.
· Ability to meet Department's physical standards.
· Ability to obtain certification for CPR/First Aid.
· Must complete ICS 100 and ICS 700 within the first year of employment.
· May have to cover shifts or be on call in emergency situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
STRENGTH
HEAVY - Exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
MOVEMENT
BALANCING - Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces; or maintaining body equilibrium when performing feats of agility.
STOOPING - Bending body downward and forward. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
STANDING – Particularly for sustained periods of time.

AUDITORY
TALKING - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
HEARING - Perceiving the nature of sounds. Used for those activities which require ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sounds, such as when making fine adjustments on running engines.
VISION
NEAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Use this factor when special and minute accuracy is demanded.
FAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Use this factor when visual efficiency in terms of far acuity is required in day and night/dark conditions.
DEPTH PERCEPTION - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
ADJUSTMENT - Correction of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. Use this factor when requiring near point work at varying distances.
COLOR VISION - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
FIELD OF VISION - Observing an area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Use this factor when job performance requires seeing a large area while keeping the eyes fixed.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL SURROUNDINGS – EXPOSURE
NOISE - Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss.
ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS - Exposure to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes or, the skin.
CONFINED/RESTRICTED WORKING ENVIRONMENT - Work is performed in a closed or locked facility providing safety and security for clients, inmates, or fellow workers.
