Job Summary

  • Provides the overall leadership for the Columbus West site within the logistics function in the key areas of in-bound / out-bound freight, SAP Systems utilization, raw material inventory accuracy, internal material movements, and warehouse storage capacity.

  • Works closely with Global Procurement / Transportation in the establishment and on-going support and optimization of the in-bound and out-bound shipping lanes.

  • Works closely with company stakeholders especially relative to the BD Distribution Centers.

  • Provides leadership and associate supervision within the logistics function, including the on-going training for DOT and regulatory requirements.

  • Develops and drives the overall plant forklift and material movement equipment strategy.

Major responsibilities

  • Strategic Impact / Accountability – Tactical execution to achieve plant goals and objectives within the logistics function.

  • Strong ability to lead in a 24 / 7 business environment. Supports on-going continuous improvement processes.

  • Provides strong leadership for the site for the attainment us sustainable material flows in the plant.

  • Must demonstrate agility in day-to-day support of multiple tasks and critical processes.

  • Sphere of Influence – Works with other functions within the plant and other BD locations

Essential Duties (other duties as assigned)

  • Logistics, transportation, supply chain leadership

    • Develop and maintain strong knowledge of the various aspects and critical functions of the logistics field.

    • Provide the needed training and development of associates within the logistics field.

    • Close working relationship with the Procurement team to optimize the logistics associated with in-bound materials and suppliers.

    • Close working relationship with the Sterilization team to optimize the storage and flow of materials.

    • Leadership of strategy of the use of the plant truck dock resources.

    • Effective utilization of material handling systems such as the resin unloading system.

    • Maintains on on-going strong working relationship with the Union Pacific railroad to ensure uniform resin and railcar flows.

    • Supports the flows and processes relative to the Nebraska Central Railroad organization for resin railcar management.

    • Supports the various exception management processes needed to address critical materials flow that often exist within the Columbus plant operations.

  • Plant Storage and Infrastructure

    • Ensures site leadership is appraised of the issues and opportunities associated with storage and warehousing. Provides recommendations in this space as needed.

    • Supports site projects and programs relative to the constraints and opportunities of site storage and warehousing. Provides recommendations as needed.

    • Supports the utilization and optimization of off site warehouse storage, including the required SAP transactional processing.

    • Leads and supports the entire site for the planning, requesting, and on-going management of rented storage trailers for the site, including the on-going reporting of trailer status and materials stored in the trailers.

  • Metrics

    • Freight cost review, management , and stakeholder engagement. Freight review with Procurement.

    • Inventory accuracy.

    • As required, maintaining data and metrics for material movement, receiving, and shipping volumes.

    • Fork lift operational cost and performance.

    • Associate training and performance.

    • Customer service - volume and mix performance.

    • Resin and Silo status information and reporting.

    • ASN shipping transaction accuracy.

  • Inventory

    • Site lead for raw material physical inventory.

    • SOX (Sarbanes Oxley) owner of inventory related controls.

    • Work with Finance & Operations to coordinate inventory process.

    • Performs periodic checks and reviews of inventory accuracy with the completion of the needed reconciliation transactions.

    • Works closely with the SAP / MES site lead as well as the SAP Champions / Super Users.

  • Critical Receiving Functions

    • Leadership and support for the critical site receiving tasks and functions including: Railcar planning with Union Pacific, railcar planning with NCRR, kanban processes with corrugated, folding cartons, and pallets.

    • Transaction and batch accuracy associated with SAP Goods Receipt transactions.

  • Safety

    • Leadership and support of all safety aspects of the plant warehouse and logistics functions.

    • Ensures all material handing equipment conform to the safety requirements of the plant.

  • Other

    • Leads and has ownership of the offsite trailer parking lots. Supporting and maintaining lease agreements within the direction of the overall site leadership.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities (KSA’s):

  • High level of SAP, MES and Microsoft Office experience

  • Ability to effectively communicate a variety of topics (strategic, tactical) to various organizational levels Supervisory / Leadership skills obtained through training with some experience desirable.

  • Teaching skills with references and experience are desirable.

  • Leads the development and execution of strong warehouse housekeeping and organization.

  • Supports and maintain BDPS and or Lean Manufacturing processes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • ERP, SAP, MES and Microsoft Office experience.

  • People leadership skills.

  • Effective communication skills (technical writing and presentation).

  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work effectively throughout the organization.

Supervision

  • Leads / supervises the plant logistics team. Ensure a strong stand up meeting process. Ensures strong communications and engagement within the logistics team.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Associates degree, or, Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience in a manufacturing environment associated with shipping, receiving, and logistics functions.
