Position Summary
As a member of a multidiscipline team, the Senior I & E operates and maintains the delivery of production targets through competent operation and maintenance of the power generation, and electrical distribution. The Senior I & E is self-motivated, managed and engaged in the planning process. They demonstrate to peers and the Operations Lead ownership of the facility equipment and systems. The role assures minimum impact on the facility operations and demonstrates good environmental stewardship in order to assist with the delivery of production targets and maintain compliance with Group Practice as defined in Hess Operational Excellence Expectations. The Senior I & E technician also provides key oversight and operational experience to the instrumentation and electrical technicians.
Roles & Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for the two following areas:
- Maintenance and configuration of electronic equipment such as; transmitters, control valves, PLCs and operator interface units, plus various instrumentation equipment
- Servicing, troubleshooting and maintaining various electrical equipment such as; motors, variable frequency drives, motor control centers (MCCs), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), etc.
The primary areas of focus:
Standard Work
Performs Preventative and Corrective Maintenance on the following:
- H2S and LEL monitors
- Pressure/temperature/vibration/flow transmitters, Level Gauges
- Allen-Bradley PLCs, Panelviews, and RTU equipment used at various sites
- Maintenance of radio, and fiber and wire Ethernet SCADA systems
- Install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, power equipment, and components of machinery and equipment following electrical code, manuals, specifications, schematics, and blueprints
- Troubleshoot and maintain PLCs, 480v power, 120 control circuit, 4160v switch gear, transformers, motors, electronic controls by following electrical drawings and test equipment
- Install, troubleshoot and repair control and distribution system, including motors, relays, switches, thermostats, circuit-breaker panels etc
- Install and connect power supply wiring, cables, conduit, and electrical system for equipment in new and existing facilities following diagrams, schematics, or blueprints
- Diagnose and resolve problems in electrical circuits, systems, and equipment using testing instruments and equipment
- Test continuity of circuits to ensure compatibility and safety of components using appropriate testing instruments. Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit using rulers, measuring
- Write notifications and inputs into the CMMS
- Work off a daily schedule that is pulled from the CMMS
- Assist in parts inventory for all I&E parts
- Assess risks and build a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Permit to Work (PTW) document prior executing a job
- Provide input and feedback on each job that is executed as part of the work order close out process
- Contribute to problem solving activities related to equipment failures
- Strong Lean knowledge and/or demonstrates ability to learn following skills:
- Standard Work Instructions, Structured Problem Solving, Dashboards and Operating Rhythm, 5S, Mistake Proofing

- Field based role 5/2 (9/80) work schedule
Experience
- 6+ months minimum I & E experience or combination of education/experience required
- Preferred 2-5 years working in an industrial environment maintaining and troubleshooting electrical instrumentation and equipment
- Working knowledge of PLC systems
- Knowledge of high voltage electrical systems and distribution
- Demonstrates correct hand tool (e.g., brass hammer, crescent wrench) selection and use when completing work activities
- Demonstrates use of process and data meters to capture measurement point, voltage and ohm readings (e.g., Fluke Meter 787, Fluke Multi-Meter 754, HART & 438 PowerQuality)
- Demonstrates use of HART Interface Field Device to map radar gauges and save echo curves (e.g., Emmerson 475 field communicator, Emmerson TREX, HART interface software for PC)
- Demonstrates use of VOM, phase rotation meter, and insulation testers
- Demonstrates ability to locate, read, and interpret cause and effect (C&E) diagrams
- Demonstrates ability to locate, read and interpret standards, specifications and codes
- Demonstrates ability to locate, read and interpret functional specifications/control narratives
- Knowledge of electrical concepts - voltage, current, resistance, reactance, impedance, direct current, mechanical vs. electrical energy
- Knowledge of stored energy: batteries, uninterruptable power supplies, generators, and motors
- Knowledge of application and use of electrical components such as motors, generators, transformers, capacitors, inductors, resistors, circuit breakers, electrical switchgear, motor control centers, motor operated valves, electrical relays, time delay relays, fuses, and their application in I&C system design
- Demonstrates electrical testing processes and use of testing instruments and measuring devices (e.g., voltmeter, ammeter, multimeter, and ohmmeter)
- Knowledge of the relationship between calibration, precision, and accuracy to the design and maintenance of I&C systems
- Knowledge of the design requirements of electrical safety class and safety significant instrumentation and control systems (i.e., independence, redundancy, diversity, and separation)
- Knowledge of the use of electrical components (e.g., analog relays, relay logic, motors, motor operated valves) as they related to I&C systems design
- Knowledge of how electrical components (e.g., analog relays, relay logic, motors, motor operated valves) are reviewed, and analyzed to ensure design requirements are met
- Knowledge of how normal and abnormal environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, moisture, high winds, etc.) impact electrical components and I&C design
- Knowledge of fluid mechanics (e.g., resistance to compression, pressure, temperature, viscosity, etc.) and how it impacts performance of valves, actuators, motors, compressors, instrument air systems, dampers, HEPA filters and pumps
- Demonstrate proper valve and actuator installation, troubleshooting and preventative maintenance
Education, Training & Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Prefer Associate of Science in Instrumentation, Electrical, Automation or equivalent military MOS
- Proficient (limited assistance) with Microsoft Access, Excel, Word
- Journeymen Electrical License preferred (required for certain tasks) but not required
- Electrical or instrumentation degree preferred
