Each year the mining industry discards over 200 billion tons of waste (tailings) and produces more than 7% of the world’s carbon emissions. Phoenix Tailings is on a mission to be the world’s first clean mining and metals production company. By eliminating this harmful waste from the environment, we can sustainably create valuable new materials.
We started with the humble beginnings of a few friends in a backyard, thinking of how they can fix this broken system of metals production. What we do
At Phoenix, we build novel chemical processing techniques and technologies that are at the forefront of extracting critical materials that were previously trapped in tailings, solving the waste remediation process of the mining industry, and revolutionizing the mining industry with our zero waste mining solutions.

Who we are looking for:

Phoenix Tailings is looking for a Sr. Research Scientist, specifically focused on extractive metallurgy to join our team in Woburn. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, as the key leader of the R&D division, the Sr. Research Scientist will be responsible for designing the chemistries and systems essential for us to achieve our vision of a Zero Waste World.

Even though this role reports to the CTO, you will be a trusted resource for all members of the team.

What you will do:

• Design novel chemistries to separate metals sustainability without carbon emissions
• Investigate the landscape of extractive metallurgical methods and proposed research avenues for order of magnitude improvement
• Lead proof of concept studies of proposed novel approaches as principal investigator
• Work alongside key stakeholders at Phoenix Tailings to drive the successful deployment of innovative technologies.
• Serve as a technical expert in the cross-functional engineering team designing the pilot and commercial-scale processes

What you have:

• Experience with solvent extraction and electrowinning
• Background in rare earth metals, copper, cobalt, nickel, and zinc industries
• Deep knowledge of liquid-liquid extractions and ion exchange chemistries
• 10+ years of hands-on experience in extractive metallurgy, materials test laboratory, or pilot site operations
• Ph.D. in Mining and Mineral Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Chemistry or related field
