Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing Services, and according to established policies and procedures, works with and coordinates the training of other nursing and ancillary personnel to maintain educational requirements and professional standards. Work is of a confidential nature. Performs other duties of the department as required.
1. Plan, develop, evaluate, and coordinate educational and on-the-job programs.
a. Develops and maintains training requirements for each WNCC job category.
b. Reviews, evaluates and updates competencies for each job category.
2. Develops and conducts facility orientation programs for all new employees, in accordance with corporate policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.
a. In cooperation with the supervisor’s orientation to the department, the SDC will provide orientation for facility-wide programs (fire plan, infection control, etc.
b. Coordinates clinical site training and provides orientation for nursing students.
3. Develops departmental training plans for the unique needs associated with each department.
a. Collaborates with department heads to determine training needs.
b. Identifies training resources (internal or external).
4. Maintains the facility staff development activities, in conjunction with the corporate training programs and initiatives.
a. Conduct regular or special in-service training for staff to ensure they remain current with new procedures or policies.
b. Review and utilize as necessary commercially produced instructional materials and training aids.
c. Schedule training so as to ensure efficient and effective participation (which may involve odd hours).
d. Perform as liaison with the corporate Organizational Development Department to facilitate those activities and goals.
6. Collaborates with other members of the health care team.
a. May be assigned to various facility committees for input and participation.
b. Expected to demonstrate corporate values and commit to the mission and goals of the facility.
7. Documents training and educational activities for each employee.
a. Required documentation is accurate, complete, timely, legible, properly edited, and reflects proper use of terminology.
b. Verifies prior to hire, and at least annually thereafter, that employee certifications, licenses, registrations, or other professional credentials are current in accordance with regulations and time frames.
8. Sets up, utilizes, and/or maintains equipment, supplies, and work areas.
a. Sets up, operates, and maintains assigned equipment in accordance with specifications or procedures, so that no injuries, damage or undue wear and tear occur.
b. Utilizes supplies and equipment in an economical and efficient manner.
c. Routinely checks equipment for proper operation, immediately removes malfunctioning equipment from use, prepares and transmits work orders, and arranges transport of equipment to appropriate repair locations.
d. Keeps designated work and resident care areas neatly organized, safe, clean, and stocked with the par level of designated supplies.
9. Maintains skill competence, and assumes responsibility for professional development and ongoing education.
a. Remains capable of communicating and demonstrating all skills required for the position.
b. Attends at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings, and maintains 12 hours of continuing education with a minimum of 8 hours devoted to regulatory guidelines.
10. Performs miscellaneous duties, as needed.
- May provide backup for nursing functions in the absence of a critical employee.
- Participates in other hospital, facility, and departmental support activities such as disaster plans and other emergency situations, which require stand-by and re-call at times
- Other duties as assigned
b. Effectively handles telephone in a courteous manner and responds appropriately to the caller’s request.
c. Assumes job expectations of RN or LPN when serving as a Staff Nurse.

Minimum Education
Graduation from a school of nursing with unrestricted or active current NC or multistate RN licensure is required.
The employee must have the ability to understand, communicate and teach effectively regarding the unique needs of geriatric patients.
