Job description
This is a seasonal opportunity and will work approximately 40 hours per week.
The City of Hillsboro is excited to seek a new role within our Sports & Recreation division to further build on our current community engagement and outdoor recreation programming opportunities for our community! This position will focus on planning and implementing activities such as games, art, music, physical and socialization opportunities to families in their local neighborhood parks and special events. This will be a fun, outgoing, and flexible role where building relationships, providing a welcoming atmosphere and engaging with children and parents will enhance our service to the community on a one to one level and a group setting. Recreation instructors will work with city wide internal and external community partners to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive experience for City of Hillsboro families.
The Summer Recreation Instructor opportunities (lead and support staff) fall under the Recreation Instructor II and Recreation Instructor III job classifications. Examples of Essential Work
This role will take place outdoor at various City of Hillsboro community parks and events. You will be meeting new people and building relationships with community members, you will also help provide Mobile recreation that will travel around to various community parks & events providing family focused recreation activities for youth of all ages.

Incumbents in this job classification work independently, within established guidelines, to develop, coordinate, supervise, and instruct the day-to-day activities of assigned program areas and provide lead direction to assigned part-time staff and volunteers.
Works with various internal and external community groups and organizations on relationship building, collaboration and implementation of activities for program enhancement.
Instructs assigned recreational programs, including creating activity plans, preparing materials, cleaning up after programs, and leading activities such as art, music, games, and physical and socialization activities;
- Develops ideas for recreation activities, including researching programs, formulating ideas, and creating\presenting proposal(s) to Recreation Coordinator;
- Performs various clerical duties, including working with receptionist, helping customers, answering phones, communicating program information to parents, participants, and the general public
- Works with Recreation Coordinator, including supervising recreation aides, maintaining program records, and enforcing rules and regulations to ensure safety of participants;
- Serves as a lead worker in an assigned work group, including instructing and directing the work of assigned subordinate recreation personnel;
- Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees;
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
- Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
- Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
- Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

- Plans, organizes, and instructs assigned recreational programs for participants of all ages, including creating activity plans, preparing and purchasing materials, maintaining attendance records, and communicating with participants, parents, and the public;
Acceptable Experience and Training
- 2 years of experience in youth recreation or related field;
- High School Diploma or GED; and
- Some related work experience; or
Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Bilingual preferred but not required
