JOB TITLE: IP Systems Engineer I

DIVISION: Shared Services

DEPARTMENT: IP Services


JOB SUMMARY

The IP Systems Engineer I is a position of relevant technical experience and is responsible for collaborating with other Systems Engineers to maintain, monitor, upgrade, and troubleshoot highly available server and network environments. The IP Systems Engineer I is considered a “generalist” given the breadth of responsibilities and has practical knowledge on the application of Virtualization and Server Technologies.

The IP Systems Engineer I will report directly to the Manager of Network and Systems Engineering

There are no direct reports to this position.

The IP Systems Engineer I will regularly interface with the following departments and outside sources: Shared Services Technical resources & NOC, Telesystem Technical staff, Buckeye Broadband Technical staff, MaxxSouth Technical staff, Equipment & Software vendors, and Large Enterprise Customers.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The IP Systems Engineer I is accountable for the following items for the business units served by Shared Services:

  • Collaborating on special projects as assigned by the Systems and Network Engineering Manager;
  • Reviewing and updating inter and intra-departmental documentation on existing and new platforms supported by the Systems Engineering team;
  • Maintaining physical data center environments including, racking and cabling servers, diagnosing faults, submitting RMA, and replacing hardware;
  • Collaborating with Systems Engineers to implement services including: LAMP stack, DNS, SNMP, FTP, TFTP, NTP, TACACS+, RADIUS, syslog, NFS, and LDAP;
  • Responding to assigned trouble tickets in a timely manner and working with other departments, if necessary, to achieve resolution
  • Working to ensure that problems and/or outages are responded to and resolved in accordance with internal SLAs;
  • Updating documentation and collaborating with others on the troubleshooting process for services provided in the server environment;
  • Maintaining and updating operational MOPs (Method Of Procedure) & SOPs (Standard Operating Practice) that detail processes and procedures for deployment and troubleshooting;
  • Collaborating with the Systems Engineering team to analyze events and outages for lessons learned and taking part in the postmortem review process;
  • Creating and updating of network drawings as maintenances and changes occur;
  • Collaborating with other teams to monitor the various environments to ensure that performance and availability are in line with Service Level Agreements (SLA’s) and the expectations of our customers;
  • Working to ensure that technical competencies are kept up to date with industry direction & standards: taking part in departmental trainings, vendor trainings, self-study, cross-functional experiences, etc;
  • Participating in the department’s on-call rotation;
  • Adhering to departmental policies, practices, and procedures;
  • Following and enforcing the Company’s policies and procedures, including the EEO guidelines and safety, at all times;
  • Performing any miscellaneous department duties as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Educational and Professional Experience Requirements

  • Associate degree with a major in Computer Science, Engineering or degree in a related information technology field; as well as 1 -3 years related Linux administration experience. – Preferred

-OR-

  • 3 - 5 years related/relevant Linux administration experience in lieu of a degree. – Required

-AND-

  • High School Diploma or GED - Required
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in Computer Science, Engineering or a related information technology field. – Preferred
  • Valid Specialist/ Associate level certification from Comptia, LPI, Red Hat, Linux Foundation or equivalent. – Required
    • If expired, to be renewed within 180 days.
    • If not, to be acquired within one (1) year of starting in the position.
    • Once attained the certification must be kept current.
  • Valid Associate level certification from VMware. – Preferred
    • Certification must be kept current.

Technical Knowledge Requirements


  • Working knowledge of installing, securing and troubleshooting of Linux infrastructure servers - Required
  • Working knowledge of deploying and operating applications in a LINUX server environment. (Apache, nginx, PHP, MySQL, PAM, SNMP, SFTP, TFTP, NTP, RADIUS/TACACS, etc.) – Required
  • Working knowledge of hardware sizing and constraints for deployment. – Preferred
  • Working knowledge of VMware/Virtualization technologies – Required
  • Basic knowledge of scripting languages (BASH, Python, etc.) - Required
  • Basic knowledge of the Red Hat family of Products (RHEL, Satellite, Gluster, RHIDM, etc.) - Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of automation technologies (Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, etc.). – Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of security and firewall appliances as applicable to server environments - Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of advanced networking concepts and protocols as applicable to server environments (BGP, BIRD, DNS, etc.) - Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of storage systems and technologies (iSCSI, DRBD, SAN/NAS, Gluster, etc.) – Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of VoIP protocols (SIP, RTP, MGCP, etc.) – Preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Walking, kneeling, standing, stooping, sitting, driving, hearing, talking, vision (close, distant, color, depth perception, adjust focus), and use of hands and fingers. Light lifting of 50 lbs. is occasionally needed.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The IP Systems Engineer I is a full time, salaried exempt position. The regular workdays are Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. These hours may vary to accommodate the needs of the department.
  • The IP Systems Engineer I works in an automated business office environment with business office equipment including telephones, personal computers, copy machines, and FAX equipment.
  • The IP Systems Engineer I is required to drive on the job as needed and is subject to regular MVR checks. He/she must maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record the meets Company standards for an insurable driver at all times. Any time these conditions are not met, he/she must not drive on the job and must immediately report it to his/her supervisor.
