Optum Care Network is looking for an IT Systems Engineer Senior to join their team. This will be a remote position but must be able to work PST operational hours.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, responsible for planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining the enterprise wide Windows, VDI – Horizon\XenDesktop, VMware, Storage – NetApp & Cohesity and Citrix server environments. Installs new software releases, system upgrades, evaluates and installs patches and resolves software related problems. Maintains data files and monitors system configurations to ensure data integrity. Senior level requires very little, if any, day-to-day supervision. Is considered an expert in the technical aspects of networks and servers and makes solid, and well thought out, technical recommendations to a designated manager and the Director of Infrastructure Operations. Provides guidance and direction to less-experienced Systems Engineers.

40% Hardware devices and software, new technologies, projects
- Plans (including cost estimates), designs, configures, implements, maintains, and supports server hardware and software, and server management tools.
- Assists in designing, configuring, implementing, maintaining, and supporting security management tools.
- Identifies, evaluates, recommends, and implements new server technologies. Assists with new security technologies.
- Plans, estimates, manages, and implements new server and storage projects. Assists with security projects.
- Primary responsibility is VMware VDI Horizon\XenDesktop, Storage Cohesity\NetApp, PowerShell\Perl Automation.
10% Strategic planning, disaster recovery, and redundancy
- Creates and maintains short and long-term server and storage architecture plans (including cost estimates) and connectivity strategies.
- Identifies single points of failure in the server and storage environment. Recommends and implements disaster recovery and redundancy plans.
- Leads the recovery from a disaster or a major system outage.
- Provides detailed project management documentation for all major projects and strategic plans.
10% Change management and patching
- Initiates change requests and reviews with appropriate Optum PNW IT and Clinic staff ahead of the change.
- Communicates and reviews post change status and results with appropriate Optum PNW IT and Clinic staff. Updates network documentation to reflect change.
- Notifies and communicates emergency changes with appropriate Optum PNW IT and Clinic staff
- Identifies and installs required patches to servers. Assists with patching workstations.
- Documents and reports on all server and storage changes.
10% Trouble shooting and resolving problems
- Does problem identification, isolation, resolution of more complex 2nd and 3rd level problems.
- Assists with escalating problems when necessary and assists in providing proper documentation and communication. Assists with coordinating technical staff support (internal and external) for escalated problems. Works to resolve all issues in a timely manner.
- Assists with logging, documenting, and communicating problems and resolutions. Assists with creating and implementing problem incident response procedures.
- Assists with proactively identifying more complex problem areas with trending activities and reports.
10% Server performance and operations
- Identifies and implements performance and operational improvements. Assists with monitoring and identifying performance and operational problems. Assists with server performance trending, documenting, and reporting.
- Does server and storage capacity planning, implementing, and assists with capacity monitoring and reporting.
- Creates and maintains network documentation.
- Identifies and installs required anti-virus updates. Assists with monitoring and reporting on all anti-virus activity.
- Assists with: identifying security breaches and responding to these breaches; identifying, evaluating, and implementing HW and SW security devices; auditing the server and storage environments; and creating and maintaining security incident response procedures.
5% Backup, restore, and system recoveries
- Sets up backup/restore systems.
5% Communicating and alerting
- Assists with notifying and alerting appropriate Clinic and Optum PNW IT staff for all system outages and slowness (planned and unplanned) as well as any server environment changes (as part of change management). Assists with documenting and reporting on all outages and slowness.
5% Workstation management
- Assists with: monitoring, auditing, and reporting using SMS; workstation asset management and licensing reporting; and remotely installing patches to workstations. Assists FSTs with documenting and reporting.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Note that these requirements are representative, but not all-inclusive, of the knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform this job.
Knowledge: High level of knowledge in VDI – Horizon, PowerShell, Storage. Knowledge of the Microsoft operating systems for servers and other Microsoft products. Knowledge of the differences between clustering and load balancing. Knowledge of the positive and negative aspects of various server disk configurations (none, mirror, RAID 5, etc.). Knowledge of the connectivity options for centralized storage (iSCSI, CIFS and NFS, fiber channel). Knowledge of the Blade server technology as well as standalone servers. Knowledge of how to protect a server from both internal and external attack. A working understanding of the change management process.
Skills: Excellent problem troubleshooting skills. Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills. Provide superior service, communicating clearly with Optum PNW IT and Clinical staff.
Abilities: Proven ability to effectively plan (including cost estimates), develop and implement VDI, Storage methodologies, PowerShell automation and redundancy plans. Ability to identify, plan (including cost estimates) and implement new server technologies and projects. Ability to do server capacity planning and implementation. Ability to set up backup/restores of systems, identify and install server patches, and create and maintain documentation. Ability to build a server completely from scratch with Windows 2012 and later servers. Ability to recover servers from different kinds of failures with minimal downtime/data loss. Ability to troubleshoot and recover a degraded or failed server cluster. Ability to negotiate final server specifications based on vendor/project criteria. Ability to manage projects and do appropriate documentation. Ability to develop and maintain good vendor and business partner relationships. Ability to discuss technical issues at differing levels of understanding. Able to work independently and in a team environment. Able to handle multiple tasks at one time.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree required or comparable experience.
Experience: Minimum of five years of engineering experience focused heavily on designing, planning, implementing, and maintaining secure server environments. Experience with: Powershell, VDI – Horizon, Cohesity\NetApp storage, TCP/IP; Active Directory; Exchange; DHCP/DNS; Microsoft operating systems. Familiar with a variety of server monitoring tools.
Certificate/License: Certifications/diplomas such as: VMWare, Microsoft, NetApp preferred.
