Who we are:

Southwood Hospital is the area’s largest acute inpatient hospital solely dedicated to children and adolescents. Opening in 1984, Southwood is now part of Acadia Healthcare, which is the nation’s leading provider of Behavioral Healthcare in the United States. Southwood currently provides care for up to 74 youth who generally stay 10-14 days. We continue to meet the Joint Commission’s Gold Standard, which is the highest accreditation available to any healthcare facility.

Position Summary

Are you certified teacher who is engaging, innovative, and strives to teach the whole child? Southwood Hospital is looking for passionate and engaging Elementary, Middle, and Secondary education teachers to join our staff. A Southwood Hospital Teacher facilitates academic, social, and other formative skills, using a thematic curriculum based on core subject areas and state standards. This position is perfect for professionals who strive to promote cognitive, social and emotional development that is age and grade level appropriate for students. Southwood Hospital strives to create an individualized and effective experience for students while in our care. Our team is looking for collaborative and consistent teachers ready to positively impact the lives of children and adolescents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Develop and facilitate an educational program to meet the needs of students while hospitalized.
• Create lesson plans to teach fundamentals in core subjects as well as social and emotional needs.
• Observe students to evaluate their educational abilities, strengths and weaknesses, while working with them to improve their abilities.
• Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups or one-on-one.
• Communicate with family members, counselors, student’s home school district administrators and classroom teachers on academic needs and progress.
• Work with students individually to help overcome specific learning challenges and prepare students for standardized tests.
• Document educational plans, goals and progress, as required by Southwood Hospital in conjunction with Upper St. Clair School District.
• Supervise classroom and maintain a positive environment for learning.
• Develop and enforce classroom rules and routines.
• Demonstrate positive reinforcement while using an empathetic and professional attitude towards students.
• Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.

Job Requirements

1. Bachelor’s degree in Education.

2. Valid Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate.

3. Experience preferred.

4. CCM (Comprehensive Crisis Management) certification must be attained upon hire and maintained to include annual refresher.

5. CPR certification renewed bi-annually or upon expiration of certification.

5. Must be knowledgeable of the developmental stages and behaviors for early childhood and elementary, middle, or secondary education students.

6. Maintains competence in identified universal, core and critical competencies.

7. Valid Act 34/34 clearances

8. Must meet job competencies within 90 days of hire.
