TxDOT's Southeast Harris Area Office is seeking a Transportation Engineering Technician to join us in the delivery of essential projects in the SouthEast Harris-Metro region. Depending on skill level, this technician will perform or learn to perform all facets of bridge repair design, roadway design, and plan assembly. Duties include working in a CAD environment (Microstation) using roadway design software and requires some field work to collect data in support of the design process. This position will help support repairs to our existing infrastructure and new upcoming construction projects. Typical design projects include bridge repairs, roadway repairs, and roadway construction. Transport Engineer Tech I: Performs basic drafting, calculations and field work; learns basic design procedures and techniques. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transport Engineer Tech II: Performs intermediate drafting and calculations and basic design work; performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects.
Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Assists in preparation of roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, equipment and building plans.
- Learns to use automated roadway programs, hydraulic design programs and/or interactive graphics.
- Performs basic drafting and calculations in support of design activities; copies detailed plans and drawings.
- Performs construction inspection.
- Prepares field notes.
- Works on reproduction of plans.
- Files and makes copies.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Performs basic design work.
- Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments.
- Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
- Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience: 2-3 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with MicroStation software.
- Experience and knowledge of computer software applications and hardware such as MicroStation, Projectwise, MS Excel, MS Word,etc.
Competencies:
- Higher mathematics
- Performing basic design and drafting
- Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
- Basic roadway design
- Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
- Interactive graphic and design information systems
- Performing intermediate drafting
- Follow verbal and written instructions
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to noise
- Subject to vibration
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
